A Final Farewell to Werewolf by The Asian Badger

editor’s note: Since WW shut off his comments it seems some of his readers are using our blog as an outlet for their responses. I think it makes sense since WW got his start in the Bkk blogging scene here. He has a lot of reader submissions on this site - for sure he is in the top 5.

WW you are always welcome to submit more stories here and we all wish you the best.

As most of us know, the WW shut down his blog. He did it for the best of reasons to shut down a blog. He had nothing left to say. Sadly, he shut down his comments so those of us who were regular readers couldn’t wish him well. One of the few bad forms in his cyberlife.

His regular readers, of which I was one, will miss it. WW made no pretensions of WHY he was blogging…..he wanted those of us who didn’t live in his world (in BKK and not in BKK) to have a glimpse into his daily life.

As a result, we got to follow his exploits into the P4P world, the working world, the mundane rituals of finding housing, falling into a sewer, having the best sex of his life, and, all in all, wishing that we could do nothing more than have a beer or two to catch up once a week or so to find out how our friend was doing.

His final post, “Sanuk” is one of the all time great posts about a farang in BKK trying to be a farang in BKK. He gets it….at the end. As John Burdett said in “Bangkok Haunts”, (paraphrasing) “Bangkok is a cosmic intersection where alien races meet and try and get along”.

I agree with that and thought WW captured the essence of that quote in his blog.

So, WW, since this has to be my farewell to you, until I get back to Khrung Thep, best of luck.

I look forward to meeting you and, over the desire to swap stories and arguments about whose turn it is to buy the next round, I for one. will miss living in BKK through your eyes. May the wind always be at your back, my friend.

Oh, and by the way….if you want to rebound in the NBA, you might consider learning how to swing your ass like Wes Unseld or Sir Charles; take it from me, your vertical ain’t that great.

All the best….your blog will be missed.

Let me just say this - you could read WW’s blog and come away with the impression that he is a sex obsessed drunkard. But I have met him in real life and it may suprise you to learn, that in actual fact he is exactly that.
His ploy, revealed to few, of engaging a pulitzer award winning ghost writer to hoodwink half the western world into believing he was a coherent and gifted wordsmith is probably one of the most significant literary scams of the 21st century as I am sure the Times Literary Critic will attest.
Despite that, I want to put on record how much I will miss Howard Spunkworthy’s (The ghostwriters real name) writing and am looking for suggestions as to which other site I should visit daily for my Thai fix.

Your departure was like Justine Henin’s exit from tennis. I respect the fact that she left on her terms and at the top of her game - but it was much too sudden.

I for one hope that this is more a case of Brett Favre. As there seems to be only a few stories per week on this site, where the heck am I going to go for my daily blogging fix? Gonna miss you WW and hope you make your comeback sooner than later.

Wanted to leave this comment on The Lair, but he turned off the comments before I got there…

WW, I came to your blog late in the game and sorry I did. I looked forward to each post. Fortunately, I got to the blog early enough so that I could actually arrange to meet you and while the blog is gone, I look forward to future beers and bar hops.

The end did come suddenly and I’m surprised you removed the archives, but good luck with whatever your future endeavors are. Hopefully you’ll put the occasional post here or on Bangkok Diaries.

Brett Favre? As a born and raised, green and gold bleeding Wisconsin native, I don’t recall Wolfie writing about throwing into triple coverage off his back over the middle after the play broke down.

I really enjoyed his blog, was hoping to meet him next time I hit BKK. I think I actually saw him once at the Duke on my last trip, but I had a buzz on and was late to meet someone and couldn’t talk.

Thanks for the blog, Senor Wolf. I hope you’ll enjoy the extra time you’ll now have in the carbon based world.

In a private email, Werewolf explains his resignation from the ‘kokosphere to me, and I reprint it here to clarify the situation for the benefit of the community. I have redacted certain portions of his text to preserve confidentiality.
“… Bangkok Bad Boy’s upcoming breakfast piece will be the Holy Grail of Bangkok blog posts. I have seen it in its draft form, and it depresses and elates me in equal measure; depresses me because I know I can never scale those empyrean heights of blog writing, and elates me as the sight of a distant snowy peak, brilliant in the sunshine, lifts the spirits with its godlike splendor. BBB ups the stakes of blog writing as an art-form, and I have played my best hand, and it is a busted flush.

In addition to this, I confess to being troubled by feelings (…) Young Penfold (…) buttocks (…) unnatural (…) loaded revolver.

I am sorry to end it this way. Thank you for all the ideas you gave me over the years, Pants, and your wise counsel on Bangkok night life (…)”

Modesty dictates I cut his extensive eulogy to this brief extract. I find Werewolf’s reasons for quitting both sad and noble. I only hope Bangkok Bad Boy’s already legendary Breakfast piece justifies the demise of one of Bangkok’s finest; a towering giant of a man with a heart as big as all outdoors. A man who

Hey gang. I’ve been lurking here for a few months and also over at Werewolf’s. I have a suspicion he may have met a “good girl” and is
trying to cover his tracks before she catches on to his past. He
alluded to one such possible hook up with a normal TG that could
cause him to give up the P4P lifestyle in a post maybe a month or so ago. If so I wish him well and thanks for all the great posts.

It is funny how WW bacame part of my daily vocabulary over the last year. On many occasions, when discussing the BKK nightlife scene with friends, I would start with “WW wrote about X on his blog, we should go check it out.” Because of him I have had a large number of new experiences, good and bad.

As I have never met WW I sometimes found myself sitting in a bar thinking if WW was around. Maybe I sound like a stalker. BTW, I am just about finished stitching together all the partial photos of WW that he has on his site (partial one on the post from his night out with his colleages, 2 on the final “sanuk” post) so that I can make a identikit photo of him. Does he really look like Frankenstien or do my photoshop skills need improving?

There is enough room in the Kokosphere for BBB and WW, BBB should not be used as his guage for how good or bad his blog is. WW had his own wonderful style and insight into writing about his life in BKK and the fact that his readership was increasing month on month it shows how much he was respected.

Good luck with your future endeavours.

    Ah… well. Thanks, I guess.

My blog was always about ME. I don’t just mean that I was the subject, but also that it was always something I did to entertain myself; that people read it was always a bit incidental.

I’m certain to feel the hole in my life without the blog there, but of late I simply haven’t had the urge to write something every day, and it was always designed to document the daily discovery of Bangkok.

Speculation will no doubt abound no matter what I say, but there are no ulterior motives. The ‘good girl’ JZ refers to broke her date with me and — so far, at least — hasn’t rescheduled.

Reader comments did not drive me to distraction, and the idea of BBB’s brilliance — while based in reality — is certainly not a factor. As noted, BBB and I wrote completely different sites for completely different reasons.

    Asian Badger nailed it:

WW shut down his blog. He did it for the best of reasons to shut down a blog. He had nothing left to say.

The one other thing AB said was that it was bad form to shut off comments.

My thought on this is simply that the blog had ended. The only reason to keep comments open would be in the vain hope or expectation of compliments and well-wishes from readers. I neither needed nor wanted those comments.

As far as deleting the archives is concerned, it has to do with how I saw the blog.

Werewolf’s Lair was a daily journey… a discovery of life in Bangkok designed to give the rythms of my life. My goal was to give a feeling about ONE life in Bangkok to people who didn’t live here.

What always amazed me was how many people read it who DO live here!

Thank God Suk Psycho said it… I’m not dead, I just turned off the WL site. I’m still in Bangkok, still alive, and there are plenty of places for me to express myself.

I don’t expect to ressurect Werewolf’s Lair. Unlike BBB when I say I’m gonna do something I usually actually do it.

However, I may be around from time to time with other contributions to the ‘Kokosphere.

There was never a scheduled life on Werewolf’s Lair. It was always going to exist as long as it did.

As to the ’sudden’ end… is there any other kind? The whistle blows and the game is over. The last brush stroke goes on and the painting is finished. Your heart stops and you’re dead.

The blog was finished, so I turned it off.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

Now, can we get back to talking about bars, girls and politics?!

    hey WW,

being one that has read all your posts, i have found them very insightful and very helpful in the planning of my next visit to BKK.

thanks for sharing, and while i’m sorry that no new updates are going to happen, i’m glad that you’re leaving on a good note.

although, i have to second the feeling that i’d have liked to have the archives are reference material.

any chance you’ll put them back up with all comments set to off?

    Myrth,

    Thanks for the positive feedback.

I never saw my blog as a reference manual that would serve someone (other than a social anthropologist) beyond the daily fix on my life that it offered as it was being written.

I can’t imagine anything that would be useful in the archives since it really was just a diary of my life.

I won’t say I’ll “never” put them back up, but at the moment I don’t expect to.

@gm: Nah, when ssB says editor, it’s more in terms of organising and categorising when and where posts appear, rather than a copy-editor.

I’m sure he cleans up spelling and layout in some submissions from the sloppier authors (such as Pants Elk, who is functionally illiterate - we have to fix all of his comments too), but obviously there’s nothing wrong with my prose, so no touch-up (oo-er) required.
