Greetings and Salutations!
WARNING: This week’s Editorial is long. You’ve been warned.
Kuala Lumpur (KL)
Visited KL for two nights this past week. I’ve been there a few times and the place is growing on me although I would never want to live there. I wrote about a trip to KL before and most of the information is the same so will just cover some random stuff.
This was a Visa run for me so just wanted to get in, relax, bang some non-thai SE Asian pussy, eat a few good meals, and catch up on some sleep. Sleep, however, got thrown to the curb.
I arrived Sunday night and stayed for two nights at the Alpha Genesis Hotel. Looked decent enough online and very close to the action in Bukit Bintang. To be honest, I mostly picked this hotel because I liked the name. It was like the name of a hotel on a new planet. I was hoping for pictures of Spock on the walls and a cool lounge named Ten Forward. Not quite what it was like but still a decent enough hotel at only $39/US a night.
For me, a two night visit means two nights at the Beach Club. I’ve hit other clubs but they just don’t have much action, especially the action I’m looking for. The Beach Club is not perfect but it’s the best p4p game in town.
The Beach Club is an open-aired club with live music and dancing. The decor is ‘Dated Spring Break’ with a Shark tank above the bar. I couldn’t take my eyes off these shark tanks when they first came out. Nowadays they’re pretty much wallpaper. Entrance fee is around $9/US with which you get a free well drink or cheap beer. Subsequent drinks are around $6/US each. Hours are early evening til around 3:30am.
The main attraction here is the p4p talent that descends onto this bar from all over SE Asia. I got emotional when I arrived there Sunday night. Sort of like walking into the Wonka Chocolate Room:
It is said that everything in this room is edible: the pavements, the bushes, even the grass. There are trees made of taffy that grow jelly apples, bushes that sprout lollipops, mushrooms that spurt whipped cream, pumpkins filled with sugar cubes instead of seeds, jelly bean stalks, and even spotty candy cubes. The main icon of the room is the Chocolate River, where the chocolate is mixed and churned by the waterfall
I walked in and did the rounds. It was not crowded compared to previous visits. Both nights in fact were about 70% full. In the past 90-110% full was the norm. I had heard from one Taxi guy that it wasn’t a very good high season but not sure if he was just pouring it on. The Beach Club barometer though does indicate something. Now that I think about it, the airports and around town were not that busy either. Perhaps KL is not a big tourist destination but previous visits have felt busier.
The place was packed with Freelancers and low on guys with the guys there being mostly losers and wankers. I had a fresh pair of quality fabric trousers on so was a magnet for the babes. There were dozens of working girls. All different shapes, sizes, and colors, and from all over SE Asia. Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thai, and especially Vietnam had representatives available. Mostly Philippines and Vietnamese though.
Night one I was a wildcat. It was maybe two days ‘without’ so I could barely think straight. I needed to get crazy with a bubbly little asian ho (man, I think I need help). The girls are not shy here which makes it all even simpler. Girl after girl came up until finally my spec arrived. A tiny and chubby Vietnamese gal named Ha comes up and the lust sparks fly. It’s so easy when they’re aggressive about it and also dressed in hot pants and a cleavage-baring top.
I usually don’t take too long before I engage in how much it will cost. I start out by saying “So, are you working here in KL?”. That usually leads right into “How much?” which leads into “How much can you give me?” and then into “You have to tell me?”. I know this doesn’t conform to the BBK rules on negotiating but it works for me. I like to hear what price they start with.
The standard long time is 300R or around $80/US. You can haggle down and usually get 200R or less depending on the girl and her situation. Ha started at 500 (and I thought she loved me) and ended up at 300. Wasn’t in the mood to chew her down just wanted to get on with the show. I was coming up on three days ‘without’ now.
We headed back to the hotel and proceeded to get really naked and do stuff to each other. She said she was 20 and was fairly short with a bit of meat on the bones. Okay, enough details, she was great. Something about Vietnamese girls. She was a little chunkier than normal but in a fun way. Great attitude and smile. Need to get back to ‘Ho’ Chi Minh City.
The second night it was much the same but decided to visit the Philippines instead. A lovely and thin Cebu girl. I was actually ready to call it a night as I pounded drinks earlier at dinner but then Cebu came over and grabbed my willy within a minute of us knowing each other. Cebu said she was 29 but might have been early thirties. Raisin boobs but made up for it in spirit and sluttiness. Around $60/US for long time. I was in a better negotiating position the second night given the previous night and considering I would be back in Bangkok the next night.
So, Beach Club is fun, for me anyways. It’s a little expensive with a weird crowd but the live music can crank and there are tons of working girls looking to have a good time. One of the top freelancer spots in Asia for sure. They are not all stunners but most know how to have a great time.
Some KL pics:
A brand new Crocs went up. Planet Hollywood across the way has been closed.
This is a pic of a glass lift I sat under while having lunch at the Dome Cafe in Bukit Bintang. If you’re into looking up skirts this is pole position.
Gold Man. I wonder what Sachs is doing?
Malaysian Bum Gun. Archaic. You have to turn the knob before water comes out. The super spray technology used here in Thailand is far superior.
Old Asia Foot
Other fun facts about KL, in the heart of Bukit Bintang there are a bunch of massage shops with hawkers outside begging for your business. Some of the female hawkers are dressed slutty but not sure if that means the place has happy ending options. I didn’t get time to try one out. If anybody knows it would be interesting to find out.
There are streetwalkers all over Bukit Bintang with the clear majority being ladyboys. They are all over the place. Not as many as listed in YP’s address book but pretty close.
Food options are plentiful. Open-air restaurants on side streets are my favorite. Tasty, generous, and very cheap. Smoking is also permitted everywhere, in Restaurants and Clubs although some venues have smoking sections.
When I travel alone I often have somewhat interesting run-in’s with Taxi guys.
Most taxis in the tourist areas don’t use the meter so best to ask your hotel how much certain fares will cost. I was in the middle of one journey and asked the guy how much it would be. This one instance I forgot to negotiate the fare up front as I was giving somebody I met at the embassy a lift to his hotel on the way. The Taxi guy pointed down at the meter. It was like seeing Big Foot, a meter being used in Malaysia? The fare was about 20% cheaper with the meter but I gave the guy a great tip for using it and for the possibly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
My somewhat interesting run-in this time was due to moronic behavior of mine wrt my Passport. On my way home I grabbed a taxi and asked him to stop by the Thai Embassy first and then to the airport. Piece of cake. He was a strange-looking fellow around 35 with bad skin and a fucked up eye but I’m sure he’s up for the task. We’ll call him Rico.
I get to the Thai Embassy, wait in a line for about 15 minutes and then get to the window. Dude can’t find my Passport. Scurries about and finally finds it. He hands it back and says “no more pages left”. Ahhhhhh. He says to go to the US Embassy to get pages added and then come back. Ahhhhhh.
So, off we go to the US Embassy. Naturally, Rico gets lost and we end up at the Embassy residence (very swank) and then the back of the Embassy. Finally we make it to the front and it’s closed. I beg the lady and tell her the Thai Embassy sent me over and I have a flight to catch. She gives me a number to call of a lady inside the Embassy. I borrow Rico’s cell phone and call. I proceed to beg and she lectures me on being a dumbass and not checking. Anyway, she lets me in and I get them added for free, and then she lectures me more and tells me that my passport expires next year and that I should process getting a new once 8 months in advance, which I will do. I couldn’t bare her wrath if I were to screw that up.
Anyway, back to the Thai Embassy with Rico. They let me in and fix up my Passport.
To that miserable old US Embassy lady who loves to teach a lesson when a man is desperate, I will always hold a special place in my heart for you. Rico too of course. I counted around five traffic violations during this little adventure. Thanks bud.
Back to the KL International Airport. The few hours before the flight were spent at Sbarro’s enjoying the free Wifi available throughout the airport and Sbarro’s free power outlets. The food however was crap. Spaghetti and Meatballs, or rather, Cold White Worms with Salty Rubber Balls. Yikes. Counter girl was finnnnne. That covers my trip to Malaysia. Back to Bangkok.
The Holidays
Things quieting down a little now after a pretty busy Christmans through New Year’s. Luckily, things went smoothly. The only close call we had was when our Chef thought it would be a good idea to serve a little Cherry Tomato on top of our Christmas Apple Pie. I guess it does have the word cherry in there.
Christmas Eve started things off this holiday season. People were out to get hammered and luckily for them there are countless places in Bangkok willing to help them achieve that goal.
Christmas was a bit more subdued. Many hangovers. Some people stuffed their faces, including me, with our Christmas dinner. Serious holiday weight gain now has to be dealt with.
The next party was the Ghost’s 22nd Birthday Party on the 30th. The event was a huge success as a bunch of people came out for the Free Beer given away by the friendly Ghost. Another birthday party or two may be coming soon plus we may add a girl element so stay tuned.
I know how PG appreciates the quality of my cameraphone so I took this special shot.
Up next was New Year’s Eve. The most punishing night of the year for bars as business is generally great and you can stay open all night. The Mango started off dragging and quiet as the Ghost’s birthday party was the night before. Then the Mango Girls saw the party toys, hats, and noise makers. The room came alive around 10:30 and raged until around 3:30 and then people just wore out as we slowly descended into 4:30. Threw the last guy out at 5. A rocking night and a great start to the new year. Of course, the news of Santika sobered everyone up the next day.
In other news, the King and Queen of Sweden are visiting this week. The crazyswedes are celebrating. They were also celebrating last week when the King and Queen weren’t here. Hmmmm.
The KFC BLOWS PETA protest against KFC made it’s way to Bangkok.
The PETA protest in the pic is outside a KFC restaurant in Bangkok today and featured blow-up BJ dolls holding a banner boycotting KFC. It demanded the chain improved conditions for chickens on suppliers factory farms and in slaughterhouse. You can read more here.
Tulip Massage was closed December 31st-January 3rd which surprised many Punters looking to bring in the New Year with a special Tulip bang.
The Big Mango Bar Girls wish everyone a “Happy New Girlfriend” and all the best in 2009. Thanks for reading and participating. One final wish, May you never get stuck in a conversation with a doesn’t-listen-and-is-never-wrong Bangkok sex-pat.
Cheers!
CLOSURE ALERT: It looks like bars will NOT be serving alcohol this Saturday due to elections in Bangkok. Sunday afternoon bars can resume serving. We received a letter to not serve alcohol. The Big Mango Bar and Duke of Wellington Pub will be open serving food but no alcohol. Patpong would be the best chance for bars serving. We will post another update tomorrow as this could change.
Spotlight Review from the Guide:
“I’ve been to CP2 three times this trip for a soapy, only tried the body massage girls. None of the women here could really be described as stunners, but you can find somebody acceptable.
The rooms are OK, plenty of mirrors, a bed, a big bath tub, and room for the airmattress … what else do you need in a soapy ?
My latest favourite, Apple, gives a decent massage while the bath fills, maybe not Wat Pho standard but as good as any of the beach massage ladies you get around the country. Then into the tub for a very sensuous wash all over, with a bit of a BBBJ while you are floating on your back in the warm water. Then onto the airmattress for the soapy body massage, which leads into the first pop.
Back into the tub to rinse off, get dried off, then onto the bed for a bit more of a massage then round 2.
My last visit was on a Sunday afternoon and only cost 1800 baht instead of the usual 1900, so there seems to be a discount for Sunday afternoons ?
2 pops, some decent massaging and pampering for less than a couple of thousand baht, sounds like a decent way of spending a sunday afternoon to me.
For girls alone it would be 3 stars, but 4 for value.” - Mike on Chao Phraya 2 Bath and Massage

coming over to L.O.S. in feb and i usually stay at the majestic suites hotel when i’m in Bangkok which if i’m not mistaken is just round the corner from the mango so i will definitely be poppin’ in to check it out. not sure how long i’m staying yet but as i’ve just been made redundant from my printing job, we’ll see how long the payoff lasts eh!! also had a blast last time i was there djing in club insommnia in pattaya and in a few bars in phuket . so i will be looking for some gigs when i come over this time. if anybody out there knows any good clubs that are willing to have farang house and techno djs play, any info would be appreciated.

pmmp, do you have any pictures of the Vietnamese or Filipina acting ambassadors? Although with that camera phone they could be supermodels and we’d never know.
Props to the woman for giving you the additional pages. It’s funny that it’s free when you are abroad but it costs a fee when you are in the USA. (that’s probably a USA/Thai girl comparision).
I’ve found it’s a pain having more pages in your passport because with so many pages the immigration agents always seems to make mistakes. One agent didn’t see my visa in the wad of pages so he gave me a 15 stamp…which 3 months later made me look like I had overstayed. That was a fun experience to sort out.

@jonfumu: Probably best to hang out at the clubs that have farang DJs and talk to some of them. There are many. Twisted on Suk Soi 11, The Tunnel After Hours, Narcissus, etc.
@bobo: Are you saying Apple looks like Kristi? That’s funny.
@Hard1: The US Embassy here in Bangkok charged me a few years ago but this one in KL didn’t. The KL one was like a palace, like the residence we accidentally ran into so maybe they don’t charge for smaller requests.
@2k: That’s the way I see it too.
All, still no winner for the Mango Weekly Giveaway. I’ll give you a hint, it is not Florida.

$80, a bit pricey, is that the high end? In Singapore good fun can be had for $100 and I would think it would be significantly more expensive than KL.
A Vietnamese quoted me (SG) $400 a few weeks ago then watched me fall on the floor laughing hysterically. I saw her working a street corner later in the night, I’m sure with much diminished expectations.
View all comments by Julian
@Julian: Most of the girls start at 500 or $140/US and then usually settle at 300. KL would be in between Bangkok and Singapore wrt prices. You could of course get something off the street for around 50 Ringgits.

Regarding KL I’ve been told that there are other clubs/bars worth a visit but that they are further from downtown. No clue what area this would be?

Has anyone ever checked the Thai areas during these “dry” weekends? I’d bet you could still get a brew those cheeseball outdoor 99THB all you can eat dinner/karoke places that seat 500 people.
I know you can always get alcohol at those little convience type shops thai people run out of their house. Heck, they don’t even observe the daily ban from 2-5pm.
Did anyone read the BKK Post today where they said the Santika owner is not liable for any criminal charges? Seems the place was never classified as a large entertainment building and therefore didn’t need sprinklers, lighting, exit doors, etc. It seems things have since slipped through the cracks like the blueprints and other documents are suddenly missing. So it looks like nobody is at fault. Surprise, surprise.

Not the reason I guessed, but I’ll drink my prize happily. I thought it was some sort of jab at W.

Hi. Does anyone have any recommendations on P4P places in UBON? I’ll be there in a few weeks. Thanks.
View all comments by hawaiilifelifer
When picking up a girl from Beach Club avoid the (Indian) taxi drivers at the exit! They will hassle the girl when you decline their offer, so you have to step in immediately and tell them politely to f**k off. Walk up the road towards the other clubs and take a taxi from there. Muslim Malay taxi drivers are the ones to choose and request putting on the meter (they usually do). Taxi prices go up after midnight.
Vietnamese girls are the most popular, but all have visited the plastic surgery. Philippine girls are usually the best for a good time.
@SukPsycho - Other areas are Bangsar and Mont Kiara. These are the expat areas. Bangsar is in decline (crminality). But if you are on your own stick to the city centre. Mont Kiara is oke but its a time consuming and energy draining exercise if you don’t know the area (I lived there).
There are some spa’s with all the options included, but I would recommend to give it a miss. It’s nothing compared to BKK.

@hawaiilifelifer: Was in Ubon a couple of years back, we hit a big disco in the city called The Rock, which was jumping and packed with Thai girls. We were the only farangs in there as far as I could see, and got lots of attention. I was too drunk to be any use to anyone, but my pal picked up a 1k LT.

Viv Graham (1959-December 31, 1993) was a British mobster and former professional heavyweight boxer who, operating a chain of Tyneside nightclubs and bars, was a reputed organized crime figure in the Geordie underworld involved in extortion and racketeering activities.
A well known bouncer and “hardman” in the Tyneside-area, Graham earned a reputation as a hardened and violent criminal, particularly after an incident in which rival doorman Stuart Watson was severely beaten by Graham following an altercation at Hobo’s nightclub in Newcastle’s Bath Lane in 1990. The fight was later revealed to have been recorded on video resulting in Graham’s conviction for assault and served a three year prison sentence

My ex is from Ubon so I always had company when in town so I never got the chance to fully explore, but as at last christmas (07-08)the Montana hotel had a Karaoke barwith the usual p4p, the area around the Nevada Inn had quite a few bars, and there was a club called felice with coyote dancers. Things, places, names all change of course but there is certainly plenty of p4p in Ubon, lots of uni girls too who might like to practise their english!

Seems pretty simple to me. “bkkldby” mentions in his review that he’s been going to Cascade for 20+ years. Realistically, this places him in his 40s or 50s, if not older. Is it any wonder that Young Penfers, with youth and looks on his side, is welcomed rather more enthusiastically?
I hated typing that, but it’s true.

Spent a night in KL on the way back from LOS in December and visited the Beach Club. Full of very aggressive women, the ones I spoke to were from Cambodia and the Phillipines. Didn’t indulge due to a severe case of EBS (empty ball syndrome). Would like to know if you had problems taking the ladies back to your hotel. Where I was staying they had prominent signs about ‘No prostitutes’ and that wasn’t what you would call a classy hotel.

@OFB: I’ve stayed at the Hotel Istana and the Alpha Genesis and never had a problem. They never even took an ID either.

Help please - I normally stay at the Majestic Grande on Suk Soi2, which is close to the mango epicentre. However, the prices here have gone through the roof. Any help on a nice guset friendly hotel on soi4 would be appreciated. Is the Woraburi Hotel good. I want something better than the Nana Hotel. Thanks for your help.

I meant to say guest friendly!

@auk: Too bad on the majestic raising prices. The Woraburi is not too bad. I always get mixed reviews so I would say it’s 2-3 stars. The Dynasty on soi 6 is decent enough. The Omni on soi 4 is dated but reasonable, not as nice as Dynasty soi 6. They’re all guest friendly but always good to check when you make the reservations in case things have changed.

Auk — I stayed 5 nights at the Grande a while back and it’s a wonderful place. I had a room for 3800, off their regular 5,000 a night.
That was a vacation and on my quick trips up to BKK I’m not really up for paying even 3,800. So I “downgraded” to the Majestic Suites at Soi 4 / Suk. Smaller, but same style. 1,600 a night. Very guest friendly.
If you like the Grande but don’t want to pay a grand, then choose the Suites.

@Auk - I, too, usually stay at the Majestic Grande. Typically about US $100/night. Last time I was in Bkk, which was mid-December, I searched http://www.kayak.com and booked the same room on-line for $75/night. When I called the Majestic to try to book that room thru them rather than on-line they didnt allow it. Actually, they quoted me a rate similar to the one you mention. Lesson is…on-line rates can be far superior.
Also worth noting, I stayed at a Citadine Hotel on Soi 11 in November. This is a hotel/service apartment. Brand new, nice and an all-around good deal at $45/night. It’s a 4-star hotel and for that price, pretty reasonable. Since it just opened, they were offering that cut-rate price. After searching on the kayak.com again, it seems that rate can still be had.

Another question for the intelligent masses. Are there any ‘dry’ days around the 27th February to the 6th March. Bringing a newbie and having 3 days of bar closures is not of interest.

Here is a list of Public Holidays:
http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/the-staffroom/37301-official-government-holiday-schedule-2009-a.html
February 9 to April 6 is probably the longest stretch of the year WITHOUT a public holiday.
We just finished the latest election for mayor of Bangkok, and the by-election was last weekend. The timing seems too tight for any new elections to be called for any reason.
During the 2006 coup, it was business as usual for the bars, so even the Army seems unlikely to spoil your plans.
I think you’re safe.

Thanks WW - A cold one on me if I see you in the Mango during my visit. Did I just give a beer away?
