For those in Thailand it seems the rainy season is just about over and the weather is turning cool. Up here on the 17th floor of Grotto Control the breeze is almost chilly. You gotta love it. For those outside of Thailand thinking about coming over - come on by. The weather is awesome, there are plenty of girls and I think you will have no problems getting a room. This is a great time of year.
It seems the desperation from a crappy economy and the lack of a high season is starting to have an effect. Talking to some of our vendors I am hearing that some bars and restaurants are getting behind in payments. Most vendors extend 30 days credit to bars and restaurants but my guess is most bars had an okay September but a shit October which means the bills coming due in November are going to hurt.
Notice the police? They are out in droves on the street looking for anyone and anything to bust. This is what happens when the take is down due to a lower tourist season. Just walking home I have been stopped twice in the last week. Seems the police here are clueless about profiling. The only thing they can hope to bust someone walking around for is drugs. That is easily a 10k hit for a couple of men in the tighty brownies. BTW - they really sit close to each other on the smaller motorbikes.
Back when I had the mohawk I was getting pulled over quite a bit but so far with the dreads rarely at all but things are changing and the boys need pocket change. My take on it is the people smuggling or selling probably don’t look like they are so this whole profiling thing is quite a joke. I answer all their stupid ass questions politely and then move one. Sometimes the questions are really dumb. Do u have a gf? No. Why not? I don’t like the Thais. Do you work? Yes - I work in Pharmaceutical sales. He he. Anyway. I am sure they get lucky now and then but honestly they must waste a lot of time on this.
Stickman wrote about some bar scams and we have a reader submission coming about a guy getting pulled over. So be alert folks. When times are tough the locals will ratchet up the scams to make money since with tourism getting wacked the locals are going to feel it.
Asian Sweetheart talking about the recession hitting her bottom line. I did not know what she did for a living but seems she is involved in the translation game. For sure with less tourists coming her biz will drop off. Speaking of the translation game I was talking to another guy who does this and the stories about what gets translated between the overseas guys and their local Thai sweethearts is amazing stuff. I was dying listening to some of it. There are so many suckers out there and frankly - I don’t think the Thai girls are that conniving but the guys are just dumb. I would love to get a hold of some of this stuff - it would make for an amazing read.
Thai Crisis has a great post looking at the net results of the current account balance. Simply the balance of money coming in versus money going out. Well it looks pretty bad folks. More money has gone out than has come in for some 6 months now. Tough to sort out the bottom line but if this continues Thailand is probably doing worse than first thought. Tourism, exports, and the stock market have a lot to do with this but either way it points to the fact that from a macro level things are slowing down. The data does not even include Q3 so the numbers will only get worse. Good news for those looking to holiday - you should be very welcome in town.
To the clowns running Thailand - would be pretty easy to fix some of this.
Spent an afternoon in Paragon on the cosmetics floor. I have never done this before and wow - what an eye opener. For starters Paragon seemed a little light on traffic. Food court and restaurants were busy. Seems lots of folks at the movies but the general traffic in the mall was light. However the cosmetics floor was rammed. This is mostly locals. Hi-so girls, g-clubs girls spending their tips, YP loving shemans and cougars.
I was in tow with a g-club honey but frankly I think it helped since if you are seen with white skinned well dressed Bkk girls you will typically get some looks from other girls of the same type. What killed me was the ladyboys were practically having sex with me with their glances. That floor is full of them. A few of the counters are staffed entirely by LBs. Many of them in the right outfit looked like they would easily be able to moonlight at Jenny Star Bar in Pattaya. YP needs to do a post about how to hunt for LBs at Paragon. Can’t be too hard. YP 2010?
The hi-so honeys are crawling all over the place and dropping cash like it was going out of style. The fun girls to chat with were the girls working some of the counters. They seem to love chatting with a Farang and I don’t think it would be hard to get some numbers and make some dates. What killed me was listening to them talk about the Farangs with their bargirls and the money they will dump to try and impress what most of these counter girls think are girls who would rather not be in Paragon. I am not judging here but I am sure it might look funny for a guy to cruise in with his girl from Nana and load up at the makeup counter hoping to make points. Kind of silly. I do plan on hitting the floor again solo and be on a pretend walkabout in hopes of bagging some numbers.
However what I think would be the easiest scores were the cougars. Let me explain. A lot of the brand name makeup counters sell a membership. Lasts for a year, offers up discounts and allows the card member to use the services of the make-up artists for a certain amount of times per year. Meaning the cardholder can book an appointment to have her make-up done for free if she is a member. You could see all over the place cougars sitting down getting their make-up done and flirting with the gay make-up artists. While I was waiting at one counter a cougar getting her make-up done next to me just starting chatting me up. She could care less that I was with someone. I was being watched so I could not bag a number but that would have been easy. They are looking for attention and my guess is some time in the sack. Who am I to deny them the chance? For YP - maybe a business in the making?

SSB this question may be better answered by the Soi Lawyer, but what are your rights (if any) when stopped and questioned by the police in the street. I assume you must have your passport and visa with you, but what about body searches, given the drugs would be the biggest payer for them. And what about when you are driving? Can they just search your car for what ever reason or do they have to have a reasonable suspicion that you have drugs on you to conduct a search?
Having paid the “on the spot fine” many times whilst driving in Thailand I have never been searched. But what do I do and what are my rights, if any, if they want to search the car and myself. Generally I would just agree to it as I normally have nothing to hide, except if it is the Gik in the car and not the wife. And what happens if there are passengers in the car I am driving that happen to have a joint on them? Do I get charged as well? What about intrusive body searches? That one probably best answered by YP.
And what about drink driving offences. How do the police determine you are driving under the influence of alcohol. By their observations, eg car driving erractically, your breath smelling strongly of alcohol, you being unable to walk a straight line or touch your nose.
Probably a long submission required to these questions, but I have found it difficult to find much on this via the net (in English).
And finally from your experience being stopped and questioned are the BIB just looking or anything that would require you to buy tickets to the Policemans Ball or are they slanted more towards getting you to answer in a way that a body search is required.

as in most se asian countries my understanding is they can do just about whatever they want other than beat the crap out of u. they can have no probable cause at all and search u right down to your skivies.

as far as the alcohol thing I am not sure what the thai legal limit is or how they determine it. I have never driven drunk but it is a problem in thailand.
for me I am sure, given there pathetic attempts at profiling, that they assume they got a live one and will find something on me. They never do but they love trying. the goal for them would be for me to have to pay them something to get off.
I dont mind the stops. allows me to practice my ultra polite thai and test a few new words hoping to razzle them a bit. knowing I am doing nothing wrong - well maybe other than walking since no one does that here - I am not worried.

I was stopped by the cops for u turning in the wrong place one night driving some birds car because she was pissed, He stopped the car said hello asked if i had been drinking i said i had 1 bottle Tiger which is true, he pulled out his little machine to blow in which i did, passed with flying colours , payed a 400 baht for u turn mistake..off i went .. He did not ask for driving lisence, or even if it was my car, nothing at all not even my name..my be he was excited about nailing a Farang.. I was a little worried as you here these stories about all sorts, i was thinking maybe the machine will be rigged,etc..
Another time i was driving up Sukhumvit in the bus lane but i was lost.. They pulled me up and said what i had done wrong and i had to go and pay 400 Baht at Lumpini Station with in a week , i said how about i give you 500 now, he said ok, but i only had 1,000 notes. I said i am not giving you that so of he went to 7/11 got my 500 baht change ,he gave me a salute and stopped the traffic for me to pull out.. happy days..

I was pulled over while in a taxi going down soi22. Myself, the driver and my issan lady were pulled out and search thoroughly,I had an open glass of whiskey in my hand, and 15000Baht in 1000B notes in my pocket. I thought I was about to lose it for sure. But they said nothing and just smiled, gave me my money back. So I can assume that open booze in a vehicle is ok? I’ll get seriously slagged on this opinion, but one thing I DO NOT like about Thailand is that the police tolerate drivers zooming down the roads at reckless speeds with no regard for the safety of others. If you like adrenaline and speed, choose an activity that risks only your own neck, not others.
Re: van der Sloot. Will be interesting to see if the news releases going out on this suspected (but not convicted) killer being involved in human trafficing in Thailand will motivate the local authorities to locate and deport him as aggressively John Karr.
