Tuesday night Sept. 9th at 7:00pm the Big Mango Bar will be hosting a party for the sex workers and staff of The Empower Foundation. Workers from all over Thailand, female/male/trans, that work with Empower are in town for a 3-day convention and tomorrow evening the head of Empower has arranged for them all to stop by the Mango for eats and drinks. So basically there will be about 40-50 sex workers from all over Thailand stopping by the Mango tomorrow night.
Will there be free food or any party specials for non-Empower people? Nope. Sorry, but it should be quite the spectacle anyway. If you’re thinking “Wow, 40-50 hot sex workers from all over Thailand in one place? This is like Rainbow 4 but they’ll be wearing clothes, the drinks are cheaper, and there’s no barfine”. Well, I’m not sure what it will be like really but I am sure it won’t be anything like that. My guess is that it will be a bunch of normal Thai people just having a good time.
Sorry for the late notice but just wanted to let folks know in case you are interested in such an event.
Team Mango
Sweet, you can count on me being there.

“Sex workers from all over Thailand converge on the Mango”?
No change there, then ..

@ pmmp - can you really trust the readers of this blog not to turn up, congregate in the corner going ‘frnnar frnnar’ and ‘I wouldn’t… with yours’ all evening? - It’s a shame for the bar that some of your more sophisticated clientele happen to be out of the country at the moment…..
by the way….. sex workers? phwoar !!!!!!

I’ve never understood the term “sex worker” anyway. In my experience, it’s me that does (OK, it is I who do) all the work. I buy the drinks, the condoms, the polystyrene tray of insects, the motosai, the hotel room, the ballerina outfit (wupes … scratch that), the grease gun, the oven mitt full of lard, and the damp copy of Sporting Life, and it is I who labours tirelessly to bring the lucky recipient of all this largesse (and never was the large in largesse writ so bold) to a satisfyingly synapse-popping gland-bursting orgasm. Only when she is a raw shrilling mess of exhausted nerve-ends and her body cavities are scoured and lubricated do my labours cease, and I fall into a deep and well-deserved slumber broken only by the occasional fart and the soft rustle of my long-timer going through my wallet.

Sounds like a free all-you-can-eat buffet where one has to eat before??? Weird!

I dont understand, is this some big joke or what?
The whole site or just this posting?
I mean, uh, there are legitimate foundations that help sex workers out of the business and educate them in some skills, for example vocational school things. And I would not make fun on their expense about getting dudes all into p4p to meet women who are trying to get out of the biz…Bit like asking AA members to meet in some bar and ask others to bring their own free drinks with them on offer.
I think I am not getting the joke.

- I thought ‘Empower’ was the High Performace Department at BMW?

@KV: Easy camper. Go to their website and you may understand this better. Empower is not trying to get girls out of the biz. This distinguishes themselves from other organizations like Goodwill and various religious groups in town. They support the sex worker. They don’t preach that being a sex worker is bad because they don’t think it is. I don’t think it is either btw but many people won’t understand that or, like you did, assume that they exist to impose their morality on others.
You’re gonna have to open that mind up a little here to understand this. I was surprised myself after meeting them for the first time. Some really cool people running this group. Some were in the biz before and just want to help people in the biz now. Not through changing them but with things like free english lessons, health awareness, free condoms, moral support, etc.
I like this group and what they are doing and I’m happy to host a party for them. If sex workers meet bloggers at this party, so what? Everybody is happy. Make sense?

Hey easy on the host’s,
There intentions are good, trying to help out the freelance crew..
dont forget they said there game plan was to have a freelance style bar. This seems like a good way to get the word out to the girls right?
Hope all goes good I will try to run up the soi to check it out myself , prior engagement at another party , but will definitely try to sneak out for a few beers at your place.
Cheers

Nice gesture and a great way to jump-start the place for your initial idea for the “New Mango”. Tell them to Twitter once in awhile with a pic? perhaps. (You can post a pic using Twhirl, but you knew that, right?)
Hope it works out like you’re planning. Did you give WW my free beer? If you did, he’s not saying a word. OTOH, maybe he’s working on his vertical.

Will we still be able to get a pint of Tiger at the everyday low, low price of 89 baht?

Actually I think the AA thing in the bar is well worth consideration - drinks maybe 15% off, you know to really get things rolling…

Hmm…put a group of reforming bar girls together with a bunch of half-cut n horny Mango regulars and I have my doubts as to whether this is such a great idea…
Can’t help thinking about the bloke at the AA meet who stands up and says “Anyone fancy a pint?”.
View all comments by Combover
co - u seem to be confused like KV. This is not a group of reforming bargirls. They are people currently working in the industry, helping people that are in the industry(not talking them out of it) or other groups in supporting rules. My guess is a good portion of them are current bargirls, boys and LBs attending the conference.
Urge u to check the link about empower - u might be enlightened.

Ok, for those of us who could not be there — what happened?
If the event was really great, lie a bit, tone it down. Don’t make it hurt more than necessary.

Yes, I am responding to old reported news here - but I have a couple of comments. I have lived many places in the world and have been here over 10 years - yea BIG DEAL!
My brother is a Doctor (he is a contribution to the planet - a good person) and has been practicing well over 20 years exclusively in the Emergency Rooms in many L.A hospitals,
He knows how to take care of people - but he is also gay. He has been living in two (2) worlds “as he says” for a long time!
In the USA, gays - (not trying to label anyone) have made tremendous strides in American society - granted it has taken time. But their mantra was not about how much money they contribute to the economy…
Once again, I am an open minded person - but when I read from this web site - their opening line is how much money they make for the econony - - that is a bunch of “rubbish”. Maybe they are an attraction - but they make 0 contributions to the economy - only to themselves, families, and magdnas (pimps or boyfriends)!
1. Do so much for our economy - yes they do - do they pay taxes, social security, etc. to support the less fortunate - NO …….
2. Sounds to me we have a “grass roots” Union situation - similar to the United Auto Workers (UAW) ——-
The this statement - my notes within this paragraph are in bold which I copied and pasted:
Rehabilitating or Debilitating?
In Thailand about 800 to 1000 women are placed
(WHO PLACES THEM THERE - LESS THAN .001 PERCENTAGE OF THE FLOURISHING TRADE)
in government rehabilitation homes
(ARE THESE INSANISLISMS, HOSPITALS)
per year so hundreds of thousands
(HUNDRED OF THOUSANDS - NO - WHEN YOU READ THE ESTIMATES ABOUT THE SEX TRADE HERE - NO WHERE CLOSE - HOW ABOUT 5M - or about 12% of the population) OK - WE CAN ARGUE ABOUT THE NUMBERS ——-
more remain employed as sex workers (THERE CHOICE!).
But the real problem with this kind of programmatic response is that rehabilitation doesn’t help
(DO THEY WANT TO BE REHABILATED -FUCK NO- WHERE ARE THEY GONNA GET MONEY DURING REHABILATION AND AFTER? THEIR TIME HAS RUN OUT AND DID NOT GET THE SUGAR-DADDY OR BLEW ALL THEIR MONEY - NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN???)
because it limits or controls the women.
(WHAT - THEY HAVE NOT BEEN LIMITED OR CONTROLLED BEFORE BASED UPON THEIR DREAM OF EASY MONEY AND A PRINCE CHARMING)
It treats them as unequal.
It makes them feel guilty.
(WHAT NOW - THEY HAVE A CONSCIONIOUS)
The underlying message is, ‘you are dirty, now we wash you so you become clean again’.
This judgmental attitude and regulation of behavior does nothing to help women regain control of their own lives.
(WHERE IS MAI PEN RAI - NOW ) (SORRY - THEY HAD CONTROL ALL ALONG OF THEIR LIVES - THEY CHOSE)
Sex workers must be considered workers.
Concentrating on sex reinforces the stigma of prostitutes and ignores other problems that are more pressing to the women themselves.”
————————————- My Comments —
I have written software my entire professional live primarily involded in data warehouseing and data mining of terabytes of data….
I would like to start an initiative (get funds somewhere - maybe from the UN) to demographically , etceteras - identify that this is a “choice made by the workers”.
Emphirical evidence that this for the most part is a decision that was made by the woman! I surely bet that this percentage in the area of 90% is accurate (at least here - BKK).
Disclaimer - there is another element (slave trade - whatever you wanna call it) but a small percentage of the whole.
When sex is a job: an interview with Chantawipa Apisuk of EMPOWER’ in Learning about sexuality: a practical beginning. Zeidenstein, S and Moore, K (eds.), New York: Population Council, 1996
Yea, maybe I sound like a shit - but this is bullshit - what kind of CHARTER to they have - I did not see on on the www site, what contributions does this group provide —-
This is bullshit - what only 40 - 50 at the MANGO - sounds to me they are really organized!
Some feed back from anyone that was there?
1 Were they all STUNNERS?
2. Did anyone get laid?
3. Were you asked for money?
4. Did anyone get business cards and phone numbers?
5. Did anyone leave with anyone of them?
6. Do any have a job other than the sex industry?
7. Where the woman wearing a lot of baht around their neck or wrists - or any fancy watches.
Sorry - same bullshit - different pair or pants!
