Phasers set to stun…

Well folks. Spent all day yesterday at the new Mango. If you look down soi mango from soi 4 you should easily see the old Big Mango Bar sign and the new Heineken sign. The exterior of the bar is all brick and fairly non-descript but we like it that way. A few regulars have already stopped by to bless the place and admire the draft beer. Yes - the new Mango will have Heineken and Tiger on tap and at what I think are some decent prices. 89baht a pint for Tiger and 99 baht a pint for HB. All the time.

The pool tables are back and re-covered for your playing pleasure. Signature blue again. We also have 3 new TVs. 2 42 inch plasmas and one 32 inch lcd around the bar and the old Mango 42 upstairs. Supersport satelitte is in and running. UBC is on the way. The 2mb DSL line is in. Right now working on the best way to get a wifi signal throughout both levels. Kind of a pain in an all cement and brick building.

So in case you have been in a cave - the opening day is Tuesday June 3rd. 4pm. Please don’t expect a party yet. This is just a chance to get open and get going again. Party later in the month. A quick note on the kitchen. It will not be operational for a few weeks. The bar and kitchen have to be complete before we can get an inspection for our food license. Thems the breaks.

Stickman will be announcing the opening today so Tuesday should prove to be an eventful time. FYI - lady cards have been getting passed out with the flyers going out today and tomorrow. So I would not expect any of the FL action to kick in yet but we are working on it.

I saw this article on Asia Times about the age of consent for sex in Asia. Yes - the age is generally lower than it is in Western countries. It brings some interesting differences up about how some countries treat homosexual sex with different rules than heterosexual sex.

Of course Thailand is mentioned:

In the popular sex tourism destination of Thailand, the age of sexual consent is 15, but this seems to apply only to Thais. In the sex trade, women must be 18 or older. In South Korea, the age for sex - homosexual or not - is 13. China, Brunei, Israel, Mongolia and India legally allow consensual, heterosexual sex at 14.

This is the first time I have seen 18 listed as the age for the sex trade. I was always under the impression it was 20. Still researching this a bit but tough to get a solid answer on something that is illegal anyway.

Check the Philippines though - how wacked is that:

In the Philippines, the consensual age of 12 applies to males and females alike. But sex with a person under 18 is an offense if, like in Japan, the minor’s consent has stemmed from prostitution or coercion. Simply put, the Philippines and Japan fall into a 12 to 18 age bracket for sexual consent, depending on the nature of the sexual relationship.

Well. Back to Mango building. Tuesday quickly approaches.

ps. We should be getting a Pattaya column back very soon. Stay tuned.

Good luck with opening day; maybe you’ll get a free firework show if the rumours are correct and the balloon goes up with the government.

Will be in LOS mid-month, so see you then.

    Had an early session today.

On the walk down the soi to the hacienda, I pointed out the new bar to my number one t-rak. Commented to her, “Open wun ankhahn. Same, same, soi jet. Girl meet farang guy.” “Ohhh,” she responded approvingly with a nice, pert nod and head flip.

    Always a team player.

    Thanks all.

MSB: Sorry, no. We will see how it goes though. It was more of a space and maintenance thing more than anything else.

re - wifi, the Linksys 54g routers are dirt cheap and do a decent job in mesh networks. You can also use the ‘IP over power line’ things to talk to the main router. Stuff like this

    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=294&name=Powerline-Networking

I’ve had pretty good luck with that stuff setting up multi floor networks.

Again, good luck with the New Mango.

A security guard who sits in front of the Nana Hotel elevators collecting ID cards told me ladies under 20 are not allowed to go to rooms with customers. One 19 YO BG I know told me the Nana Hotel guards will sometimes try to extort her or her customers for anywhere from 100 to 500 baht to go upstairs.

If the customer doesn’t pay before the lady goes upstairs, the guards will try to collect a smaller amount from the lady when she returns to collect her ID card.

I presume you will be open daily from 3 June until the opening party mid-month?

I’ll be there for the soft opening (Young Penfold tells me he likes soft openings), dressed as a woman to test the zero=tolerance ladyboy policy.
TAFKABBB will be ringing the bar bell all night in celebration of his new job cleaning the girls’ showers at the Uni. Only fifty baht a week but it’s all he can afford (*rimshot*) (Young Penfold tells me he likes rimshots, too).
