The thing I love about the press in Thailand is whenever they talk about the working girls they will usually mention a place or an aspect of the trade I am not familiar with. I am sure other people will know of these places but I had not heard of them. Thanks to the work of the mainstream media - Farangs everywhere can find new places to pick up girls.
So today I was reading the DailyXpress - a topic in and of itself given this is the first of an English language daily given away for fee in Thailand. My understanding, I am sure someone can correct me, is that the Nation busted off all of the basic non-business stuff and stuffed into the DailyXpress. Now the Nation is basically a business oriented paper which means I don’t bother reading it since nothing printed about theThai or International business market by a Thai newspaper could ever be trusted. For accurate business information in Thailand I would stick to the IHT or the AWSJ. So there on page 3 is - The Seedy Side of Sanam Luang.
I was familiar with the Lumpini Park hookers but not the ones around Sanam Luang. I am assuming it is the same deal however the cheapest I have ever been quoted around Lumpini is 700 baht. She was hot but tiny and was stating she did not go with Farangs but she would for 700. Which is over her normal 500 baht. I was with a Thai guy at the time and he was saying he would never go with the girls around the park because the perception is they are not clean. I am not sure if there is truth to this or if this is just a perception. He is happy to go to S. Botan for the 1000 baht though. I guess the 300-500 baht is the difference between clean and dirty?
For those who don’t think a lot of working girls have boyfriends:
“The boyfriends wait in the shadows as the girls try to hook customers,” a vendor at Sanam Luang said.”
I like all the talk about the police enforcement - the fine is equal to the cost of one tx so I don’t think there is much of a deterrent.
What I picked up most from the article though, thanks to Mayuree, was areas with working girls that I have never heard of.
- Khlong Lod - somewhere in Bangkok
- Chiang Mai’s Khamphaeng Din
- Udon Thani’s Sao Fai Daeng
- Nakhon Ratchasima’s Suan Rak
- Phitsanulok’s Pratu Khieo - I don’t know where the hell this is
I guess I have some more exploring to do.
On to other news. Seems bloggers are dying from blogging. Its killing me to think about the risk I am bearing through this hobby of mine. For sure it ain’t about the money folks. Not in Thailand.
The article mentions the race to beat other bloggers to scoops. I know we talked about the Escalator stuff first but it seems Stickman was the first to scoop the dangers of the new step at the bottom of the new escalator. My guess is someone was still coming off their yaa baa high when they built that bad boy.
Off to Khlong Lod…
I think Khlong Lod is the small canal that runs between Asadang and Rachini Roads just east of Sanam Luang. I recall an article last year in one of the Bkk English newspapers about streetwalkers who have been coming to this area for decades.
Interesting list of working girl areas in other provinces.

Speaking of klongs, a Thai golfing buddy was telling a story of BKK 30 years ago when the gals use to ply their trade in boats with “special” lights (red ?) on San Saab in Pratunam.
Why am I always the last to find out ?!

I’m Thailand the moment on holidays with a bargirl.
Last week we were watching a Thai TV show. It was a crimestoppers \ americas most wanted style show where the camera crew were out with the police. The place may have been mentioned here already but my friend said it was near Chatuchak Market. The girls were underage and were asking 500 baht. My friend said why don’t the Police go to Cowboy and Nana? She then proceeded to tell me of 3 girls she knew who had been working underage at nana & cowboy, one 16 and two 17. This girl has been working on and off for about 12 months and I feel has no reason to lie to me about this. I only post this as a warning for people to exercise caution.

dj - it is ironic that an article trying to negatively portray things happens to list a bunch of spots that are new to people.
k - the good ole days.
w - this is quite common. bars like rawhide on cowboy even specialize in it. The mamasan says if they bleed then they can work. scary stuff.

@Wentworth - Did you tell her why the police don’t go to Nana or Cowboy and if so what was her reaction?

YR - No I didn’t tell her why because it was a rhetorical question. Being Thai she knows how things work, her uncle is a police officer. Handy as her Father needs bailing out of prison occasionally.

Yes, Khlong Lod is the canal between Thanon Rachini and Thanon Asadang. It was the first of three rings of canals carved in medieval Bangkok and forms the eastern boundary of Rattanakosin.
