Full moon crazies and bar bits…

Well folks. I don’t know what is causing all the crazies to come out but my only guess is the oncoming full-moon. Ran into Pant’s Elk who described a nice cat fight in NEP the other day. He promised to write it up but I have not seen anything yet.

Then yesterday I happen to be on soi mango to witness some asshole Farang skip on his bill and try to evade the police. I was not able to stick around and see the outcome but hopefully they nailed him.

FYI - the nightlife still seems to be a mess lately. Look at the forum for a continuing discussion. Member clubs are feeling the pinch and the Thai joints are also getting closed. I am sure there are still some hole in the wall places to drink but who cares at that point. Look for some ministry in some part of the government to declare it is time to spend some money to figure out why tourism is down.

Now back to the nuttiness…

So after the bill-runner episode I happened to be back out on soi 4 to hit the family mart for cereal and toilet paper. The important things. I noticed that a quarter of the store was torn apart and the Thai dude behind the counter looked roughed-up and had a bandage on his chin. I started to ask what had happened but realized that the police were in the store reviewing the security tapes. The tape showed some Farang refusing to pay for his items and then tussling with the Thai guy. Looks like the Thai guy got roughed up and the Farang got away with his goods. How low is it for a Farang to steal from a mini-mart and rough up the Thai guy at the same time? Pathetic. Like an episode of cops on Fox…

But wait folks. It gets better.

So this morning I am over at the main office of Bangkok Bank and suddenly hear some yelling and shuffling. I look over to the main entrance to see a Thai guy getting tackled by 5 security guards, brought to the ground and then dragged somewhere out of view. I am sure they will be roughing him up a bit before they turn him over to the police. It seems he grabbed some gal’s bag that was full of cash. I always wonder about this because so many business in Bangkok run on cash with hundreds of accountants making the morning dash to the bank to deposit money, get change and settle the books.

Given this it would be very easy to rob people but usually this is not the Thai way. I was surprised to see this happen right in the branch of a major bank that  has 2 security guards for every customer. My only comment is the poor Thais are doing worse than ever with inflation so high, the nightlife getting creamed and the general malaise in the government. As mentioned before - I see more glue and paint sniffers than I ever have on Silom.

In NEP, the Cathouse is back to their all u can drink happy hour. Don’t quote me on the details since the sign was all curled up and almost impossible to read but I think it is from 4pm to 8pm. 499 baht. All you can drink. Sounds like the last bar I would want to be in during those hours.

I happened to step out on Thong Lor last night to try some new places. Thumb Bar, To Die For and Retro Cafe. Cool stuff. Will have to cover them in detail later.

The CatHouse bar owner is hurting for customers, and is finding it difficult to retain staff.

499 baht for all the beer you can drink in 4 hours doesn’t seem like such a value as several Cowboy bars offer 2-3 hour happy hours with beer and house drinks at 50-60 baht each.

Not sure who the target market is with this promotion as it seems a bit steep for the budget-minded expat, and not attractive to the higher spending tourist who may not want to get bombed prior to hitting the gogo bars.

The CH does, however, have a nice perch overlooking Soi 4, and fantastic lemon shake drinks.

Cathouse owner is clueless. He’s made some of the worst decisions ever and finally realized that he needs to turn on the happy hour again. Too little too late. BTW, his rent was higher than the Mango’s rent. IMHO, he should darken the windows and turn it into a gogo.
