As I have been out and about working on p6 I came across a great photo that highlights how much I love Thailand and why I hope it does not go the way of Singapore. FYI - I don’t hate Singapore but it is just a little too boring and clean for me. Yes, I know they stay open later than Bkk but I think the comparisons stop there for me. Anyway. My only point is Bangkok is one big messed up metropolis. Just the way I like it. Please don’t change. Thx.
I snapped this photo on Thong Lo Soi 10. Thong Lo is Sukhumvit 55 for people really serious about mapping. This is clearly the night security guard’s central headquarters. Notice the wiring, the light, and the custom made seat rests. There was a phone and a hot water maker as well. This is so purpose built and is everything I dig about Bkk. What is even more hilarious was the location. Outside an expensive Italian furniture shop where the sofas are custom made and cost 100,000 baht on up. Amazing Thailand.
That is amusing.
A store owner, pays thru the nose (key money) for a superb location, has 150,000thb a month in rent and several million in exclusive inventory, maintenence, employees….and then a guy with a total working capitol of 350thb can set up a mini slum/business in front of the place.

kj - very amusing.
I am sure this guy works for the place but this is the silly stuff the thais forget. if they don’t build a security place for him than I am sure he assumes he should erect one for himself.
love it.

My building was recently remodeled and looks great.
The owners spent millions on marble, glass, furniture, paint, etc…they have a fleet of shiny Benz/BMWs…..
….and the security guard doing his Issan Campout next to the front door.
Strange but true.

I lived in Spore for about five years and have been back about twice a year for the last 10 years.
Spore is two different cities all in one…the one side is the side they want you to see, the other is the way it really is. More upscale than Thailand, perhaps, but every bit as “agile”.
IMHO, the difference is Spore is you have to know where to go, and be “accepted” whereas in BKK, it’s all there in the open.
My own personal experience is that Spore, within its own confines, is badder than BKK but BKK is a hell of a lot less effort. YMMV.
