Drying Out, and Closing Down

Dry

Well, it’s official. The local FamilyMart has a big sign on the counter confirming that no alcohol will be sold from 6pm Friday 14th to midnight on Sunday 16th.

The following weekend (21-23), expect the same restrictions to be in place for the election.

Bars aren’t being asked to close, but if they can’t sell beer, don’t expect them all to stay open. Better start stocking up…

Another Nail In The Coffin

Nana Plaza’s Angelwitch has claimed the dubious crown of being the first of the Nana bars to increase their prices as we enter the high season. You’ll now be expected to pay ฿140 or ฿145 for a beer, depending on your preferred brand. No doubt others will follow suit.

With the Nana branch of Subway apparently on its way out, and the Soi 23 branch going 24-hours, it’s pretty obvious where the action is these days. For the hard of thinking, I mean Soi Cowboy.

The End

Which brings me to the point. After just over a year and a half of sharing my Bangkok adventure with friends and strangers alike, it’s time to move on.

As promised, I’ll be in Baccara on Christmas Day, celebrating in time-honoured fashion. If you’d like to join the fun, there are a few rules to observe, courtesy of Maddox:

  1. Do not make direct eye contact with me.
  2. You must adhere to the following procedure when shaking my hand:
    • Stand directly in front of me with both feet together.
    • Extend your arm in front of you and wait for me to engage if I choose to do so.
    • If I grant you a hand shake, you may hold my hand, pump once or twice, and then promptly let go. I will then wipe my hand with a moist towelette, and you will bow, step aside and quickly walk away.
  3. You must stand at least 3 feet (1 m) apart from me at all times.
  4. Do not talk directly to me. If you want to tell me something, write it down and hand it to an assistant.
  5. Formal attire is encouraged (suit + tie if possible).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a book to write.

    Well, dang.

    Sorry to see you go, though I've enjoyed reading your many stories and observations over the months I've lurked here.    I'm making my first trip to LOS next fall, so maybe I'll get a chance to write about a few of my own tales, eh?

    Cheers!

    Well I saw it coming.  The early excited stories to the recent lame attempts at keeping it going.  You were struggling to find a reason to continue and good on you to call it quits while you're still ahead (or still getting head).   It's a great site and one to be proud of.   It's just that Bangkok thang … i remember my first night here, the neon, the traffic, the tarts … it was amazing.   Like walking into a movie you could touch, smell and jizz on.  But like the kid in the candy store, the taste goes away and when whoring becomes as functional as taking a dump it's time to take a break.   I've had three years here.  First year was "amazing thailand" at it's best, then it seemed like i was trying to find the excitement i had before and not coming up trumps.  Now i'm happy to take a dump in some sorid short time hotel once a month to get it out of my system and go back to my ex-hooker wife - who no doubt gets dumped on far more often than me.  I hope the book works out and teaching english keeps paying the bills.

    @JAFO: Thanks, dude. Drop me a line when you write about your first trip.  There's nothing like it in the world.

    @Pants: I love you dude.
    @Maomak: Hoisting a Beerlao right back at ya'.
    @geoff: Er, what was the question?
    @Penfold: I am neither of those things, and working on remaining so.
    @doctorbond: Mmm, dromedary.
    @pmmp: It was never going to be anywhere else.
    @twerp: Oh, how comfortably your epithet lies… Just goes to show, you can't please all of the people, all of the time. Thanks for the thinly-veiled compliments though.  The book will obviously rock your world, and for your information, I've never taught an English class in my life.

    "I've never taught an English class in my life" … I'm actually not surprised i was wrong, your english is far too good  for most bangkok english teachers i've met.  My incorrect assumption was because you made the trek back to the UK during a school holiday at a time of year no one in their right mind would visit England.  I thought you must be teaching more than Issan girls how not to gag.

    And Tsongpa is wrong, writing doesnt have to be a miserable experience.  It's how i make my living, it's how I manage to survive in this country (or anywhere else).  I forget how many people i've met in bangkok bars who tell me they're writers, i usually say i'm a plummer.  I got a feeling you'll be the exception to the rule and actually write a book!  Put my email address on your mailing list and let me know when it comes out.  I'm looking forward to being rocked.

    @tripped: The "Mango set" refers to the service girls who used to work in the sadly-missed Big Mango Bar.  I generally tried not to shag them when I was a patron there, in case there were any jealousy issues.  Since the bar closed, I've been working my way around them. All good fun.

    @hanuman: Such illustrious company. Ouch. Seriously, thanks.

    @twerp: Pure coincidence. What's a plummer? :)
    @everyone else:

    Thanks for the kind words. The site will remain as-is for the foreseeable future, and I'll still be allowing comments until the numbers dry up.

    The site was always a hobby, and as such, needed to be fun. Recently, it's become something of a chore.

    To answer a few questions and scurrilous rumours:

    * No, I haven't acquired a girlfriend, nor have I fallen in love.
    * No, I haven't turned gay, or developed a love for ladyboys.
    * No, I'm not leaving Bangkok.
    * No, nobody's asked me to close the site.
    * No, I'm not selling the website (nobody's ever made me an offer!)

    It's something I'd been considering for a while, and I simply don't have time for a full-time job, the Bangkok nightlife, this website and writing a book. Something had to give. Rest assured, my lifestyle will not change one jot. I just won't be providing regular reports on it any more.

    At least for now. Never say never…

    Cheers!

    Gotta agree with Riodon, towards the end the updates/content started to tail off, and i had a feeling it would end soon.
    But thats inevitable, theres only so many gogos and beer bars etc to write about without becoming monotanous/repetitive.

    I think you have turned gay, so maybe we'll be seeing some suriwong updates some time soon? Offers still there……. call me, i have hulk-foul breathe and chronic excma, but at least i have a big wang

    A "plummer" could be one of two things:
    a)  a creepy teacher-like pedo
    or
    b)  someone who has no friends, is afraid of gettin close to girls, likes ugly girls, and touches guys.

    I thought the literary gent in you would know. What you thought I'd admit to putting in toilets?

    Winternet of Dis-content

    While I have only seldom gustated your frivolously non-merkin angle on what surprises some to be underbellied Bangkok, war(t)s and all, in ever decreasing drain-looping non-syntonic lapses of what ever happens to happen backstage bkk (whatever) it has been a signal politic pleasure to see the spike driven into the rice-girl's aspirations re and vis-a-vis that standard graying Romeo-and-twinkle trope that most stumble over on that first visit (as indelible as a tattoo from the dirt soi out of town) and stands as paradigm for all that is trash and transitory (above and below all else, this stands; that everything falls away, especially in the Siam sphere of what passes for love in a town jinxed by a heat-death no amulet can buy off) as the ur-nature of blogging itself - if nothing else, your uber-sumchai stance has been the Red Bull of what you have come (sin-chronously) to call the kokosphere.

    Enjoyed your site very much, you will be missed, the best webb regarding BK night life, just return from BK and found the prices going up, special Soi 33 with a beer and lady’s drink about 500 baht. The girls are not so good either. One-way to keep the clients away, found Soi Cowboy the best and Nana a drop out zone, I am there for a long time next year working so I hope the prices stay reasonable in some of the bars. Or it’s off for a membership in one of the Thai private clubs. Stay luckily and I will look forward to read the book, what are you calling it, how long will it take you to write?
