Loy Krathong & small Bar Bits

Well Loy Katoey is over and I survived. For those wanting to know what it is all about please check the wiki. Loy Krathong is one of those holidays that I tend to ignore for various reasons. One - its more of an Indian holiday than it is a Thai holiday. The Thais co-opted it because everyone knows they want every excuse for a holiday they can get. Two - I detest how the bars use holidays that are about good things and turn them into reasons to decorate a bar and use traditional costumes for almost nude shows. Just seems rather over the top from my perspective. Three - I am neither Hindu nor Buddhist which means that fundamentally I will never fully appreciate the day for what it really means.

My first LK year I was the good boy going to the river with the then GF who decided that with my guard down she would use the festive weekend to tell me that her parents in Buriram needed money for random things and given the spirit of the weekend I should just fork it over without asking too many questions. So rather than using the act of Loy to wash away the bad things we almost broke up.

This meant that the next year for LK I was predisposed to a bad attitude and did not feel the day had any special significance over any other day. So on the way to the river I was texting a side-salad of mine explaining that although I wanted to get laid on LK I was too busy with the GF. The constant texting and the refusal for a tryst did not go down well with either party. So out of respect for my host country - my LK days are pretty much toast.

Moving on. Seems the Bush era is coming to a stunning close in places like Australia. Be sure to read Stickman later today for the continuing saga of Nana and the brazen stupidity of landlords.

Although it was LK yesterday I decided the best way to not celebrate was to hit the bar scene and pretend I was completely unaware of the local customs. First stop was Dollhouse. Yes the service girls were desecrating the holiday by wearing traditional dresses with their hair in the old style Thai bun. Glad it was not a hairstyle for the ages since it does not do much for me. I focused on the topless and underwearless girls on the stage to highlight my displeasure. Place was pretty packed all in all.

Next time we stopped into Shark bar and it was rammed. We moved on.

Then De Ja Vu. No LK pageantry there and a decent amount of nudity. I always love when the girls go on the stage with their underwear and then take it off while they chat and start the 2 step shuffle. There are 2 sisters in De Ja Vu that are pretty hot but always strung out. Also what is with older Farang guys clearly dropping some Ya Baa before going out for a night of go-go antics? Not only do they act like bigger idiots than they usually do but seems a recipe for getting nailed.

Then we trudged past the elephants to see some friends at Long Gun. Long Gun had LK’d the front out but inside it was fairly normal. However the new outfits that look like black pajamas, worn by train hobos of yesteryear, with the asses cut out just don’t do it for me. Either get naked or wear something sexy - not clownish. Long Gun always works if u have a girl in tow. The sexy shows seem to always go over well with the ladies. LG appears to be doing some mild upgrading. Must be the first work that the bar has seen in 6 plus years. My guess is the competition from all the bars getting fixed up is having some influence. The hallway to the bathroom has been freshly tiled and the ceiling was getting fixed up. I was stunned.

After cowboy we headed to  Spice club. If u get into Spice before 12 midnight there is no cover. The place was starting to fill up and looked to be heading for another packed night. A few of the Coyote girls are pretty hot but seem to disappear as soon as they get done dancing. The live band stuff I can do without but once the place is in full club mode it has become quite the pick up joint as of late.

back to normality…

The older Thai’s tell mean that the Loy Krathong is totally misunderstood these days. People are suppose to clean the river instead of polluting it. The police are also on the hunt for young Thai’s as it’s apparently the the night of the year when most Thai’s lose their virginity.

in previous years I remember the big push with plain clothes police and flashlights staked out at the short time hotels. This was part of thaksin’s morality campaign. Fortunately my 18 yo gf at the time shared an apartment with a friend who was out of town so I did not have to risk getting caught. Course this is the same Thaksin who kept one of his mia noi’s working as a receptionist at the Grand Hyatt to keep her from partying to much.

I did not see anything in the press this year about protecting the young ones during LK.
