Spicy, Tuk-Tuks, Lucky and Gravatars

Hello folks. Housecleaning issue before I move on. We have implemented an avatar feature for the comments. To get your avatar go here - http://site.gravatar.com/signup . Once you create your avatar, it will show up automatically on the blog when u comment. It is linked to your email account as a registered user. It will also work on any other site that implements the Gravatar service. Lots of blogs and websites have already. Cool stuff. For an example just look at any of my comments.

Been heads down on p4 and Mango 2. Getting a good lease around this town is not easy but we shall prevail. Last night we left work kind of late since we celebrated a birthday for one of our staff members. We had open bar while I played famous Thai rock songs from my laptop. I am sure if someone walked in on us it would have seemed funny but these employee parties are good for staff morale. It is always fun chatting with the staff when they are more open and not on the clock so to speak. There may be a few hangovers among the Duke staff today but such is life.

pmmp and I shared a taxi home and decided it would be a shame to waste our buzz. So we dropped our bags and headed for spicy club. We got there are 3:30 am and it was still pretty packed but it was a total sausage fest. Even among the girls things looked pretty picked over. Weekends and high season suck for the freelance after-hours spots. Get used to it. We made a few loops and decided to decamp for lower grounds.

Before we get to Lucky I want to mention again the dynamics of the after-hours scene. There are tons of girls in there that one would not expect to see. For example. I ran into a hottie who is a bartender at a local pub. to be clear - not our pub. I know tons of guys hit on her at work and have taken her out on dates only to get nothing. They all tell me how hot she is and how she is so proper and tough to get into the sack. When one guy told me this before he sweared to me that I was lying when I said I had seen her at Spicy many times. Partying and raring to go. Saw her again last night. After-hours is a treasure trove of goodness.

We bailed on Spicy and figured it was time to check out Lucky. Lucky is not quite the dump it used to be. They have some scantily clad dancers working the podiums. I tried miserably and failed to get a phone number off of one of them. Damn - she was hot. We decided to enjoy the cool air and lack of late night bkk traffic by taking a tuk-tuk. Along the way - pmmp offered a bounty to the driver to let me drive. We have done this before with great effect with a taxi and it worked like a charm last night. Driving a tuk-tuk is not as easy as I thought. The steering is quicker than I thought but the shifting is slow and you really got to wind the motor up to get power. I did worse than I thought I should have but it was 4:30 in the morning and I was drunk. No one died though and it was fun. Thanks pmmp.

Lucky was not busy but had a decent crowd. I wish they would fix the old speakers there since the music ain’t bad but the speakers are a mess. The cover is 300 baht for the one drink and 200 for most drinks after that. It was funny to see Tunnel girls without a pull pouring in and pretending like they had never been there before. Right. I met a few cuties and bagged one number but I was more in the partying than pulling mood and realized I had missed my goal of getting home before the sun came up. Painful.

Okay. Back to work.

Is ‘Lucky’ still full of girls suffering from ‘Monstitus’?

Hummmmm…signed up for an avatar per your instructions, but I see it hasn’t yet turned up on my old posts. Thought I’d try a new one to see if it works that way.

For those interested it seems the bounty price is 300 baht for taxi’s and tuk-tuk’s. This is just a figure I threw out there and it seems to work, haven’t tried going cheaper but 300 seems worth it.

I wouldn’t have been able to drive the damn tuk-tuk but Smitty kicked ass and got us all the way there. I also failed at driving the taxi (steering wheel being on the wrong side and all).

Just an added note that you generally don’t have to pay the tuk-tuk’s or taxi’s anything to get to the After Hours clubs (except the 300 if you want to drive). They typically get 100 bath from the clubs, 200 for Boss (which is why they always suggest Boss and why Boss if filled with a bunch of Tools). I still like to give them something so with taxi’s I just pay the meter but tuk-tuk’s max 20 baht.

pmmp - I hope we never have to read about how much the bounty is for being caught illegally driving a tuk-tuk while drunk! Be careful out there man…

I don’t think pmmp will ever get caught by the police. Not as long as he can run faster than Smitty. And believe me, pmmp can sure run fast… like the wind…..

jb: good point. I would like to add the following disclaimer to my previous comment:

“Driving while intoxicated is very stupid. Driving while intoxicated in Bangkok when you are a Farang is very very stupid. Driving somebody else’s Tuk-Tuk at 4 in the morning in Bangkok while you are intoxicated is something Smitty did, not me”

Seriously though you are right, very dumb move on our part.

Been driven in a taxi in the small hours by a pissed-up farang mate many a time. Money was never discussed (although he always tipped when we arrived).

Sounds like you had a blast. Its nice to be able to bar hop after a few hours of partying. Only in Thailand can a night like that really be enjoyed. Here in NY, its more like barn hopping.

Nice touch with the addition of the gravatar plugin.

Okay, I thought I was, but guess not, so uh…I filed in your registration form and nothing happened. Zippo, nada, nothing. Never got an email with a password. Are you trying to tell me something here? I can take a hint. Honest.

Oah - since you are a yahoo mail user check your spam folder. I am sure it is in there. The system already emailed me to say u joined and I see you in the system. Yahoo spam is notorious for false positives.

Hi OAH: Re: “Are you trying to tell me something here? I can take a hint. Honest.” (I know you were just kidding when you said this but I remember the incredibly rude treatment that an OAH got on an earlier board when he commented on the tenor and timbre of the room.

In the “snack bracket” department, these guys are many a rung above all that, are they not?.

CHaps: Although it looks like fun, I’m thinkin’ a little bit about this avatar thing. “Triangulation” would bring on noisome “second and third circle” complications.

Smitty - nope, nothing in the spam folder either, so I just ran the whole registration routine all over again. This time it worked fine. Your email confirmation appeared immediately exactly where it should have been. Go figure, huh?

Tongsuk - thanks for that. Yeah, I’ve given up even thinking of joining into conversations anywhere other than here. The endless personal abuse spewed at others by the kind of people who seem to be attracted to Thai-related discussion boards is both amazing and disheartening. For whatever reason, that sort of thing is largely absent here. Better class of folks, I gather.

oah - sent u an email regarding the issue. FYI.

In general we do police the boards and we have taken to deleting or editing some things. We also try to keep the flame wars and personal attacks down the best we can. We are also catching all the spam and any comments used for promotion. It takes some work but I think it will pay off.

    thx

jc: Mine took about 15 minutes to work so give it a bit longer. If it doesn’t show up we can troubleshoot further. Just a few things to check in the meantime. I see your e-mail you registered with. Make sure it’s the same one you used at the Gravatar site. Also, after you Cropped your Avatar make sure you go back in and associate the Gravatar with your email address. This last step is not obvious.

The Boss is also a good after hours place…for post Tunnel TG’s on the hunt. Spicy can be cock heavy with far too many backpackers waisted on yabba.

PS. Ladies night in Bed Club then Tunnel was awesome last week.

Tuk tuk races can be fun*. Merely take a tuk tuk each, and offer a 500 baht tip to whichever driver gets you from Silom to Sukhumvit before the others in the group.

*Conditions apply. Nappies and nerves of steel a prerequisite.

I somehow now feel less faceless and more confident (or drunk).

    Like it. Ta.

@Smitty — I went to the Twisted Republic about a week ago or so. 500 baht to get in with two drink tickets. The layout of the place and the sound system were great. There just weren’t enough people there. I imagine once business picks up it’ll be rockin’. Drinks are expensive though…260 baht for a cocktail or beer.

Twisted is cool but not enough people yet.

They poor some damn strong drinks there though, probably to get people coming back during their early stages. Best vodka tonic I ever had in Bangkok :)

    on twisted -

I don’t get it really. they have a chance to practically steal customers away from bed and q and get people like me coming back to soi 11. So all they need is a busy bar right? how about be cheaper than the other 2 dinosaurs. Offer dynamo service and fresh dj’s. Sounds like the strong pours are good but those prices sound like bed to me. Twisted is not bed. Plus empty twisted will soon lead to dead twisted. Think sin bar. Same owner.
