I was sat in Q Bar with a pal recently, watching the crowd. A Q Bar review will appear shortly, but for the uninitiated it’s a “classy” freelancer joint. Essentially, it’s a smaller version of Nana Disco, except everything costs twice as much.
That’s not quite fair - the place is rather more refined, on the whole, as are the girls. Expect to pay ฿3,000-฿5,000 for short-time though. Ouch. I had fun spotting girls who used to be regulars at the likes of Nana Disco and Gullivers a year or two ago, and would happily go for ฿1,000. Too “refined” for that scene now, of course. Their “my shit doesn’t stink” attitude can be hilarious if you’re in the right frame of mind. “Look at me, I’m in Q Bar!”. Yeah, I know. So’s everyone else. Get over it.
But one advantage that Q Bar has over the sleazier freelancer hangouts is the podium dancers. Think tall, slim, pale and gorgeous Bangkok girls. Who know how to dance.
My drinking pal is firmly a fan of the freelancer discos. He pointed out the hot dancer, and said something like “See, that’s the difference. You’d never see a girl dancing like that in a gogo bar”.
I boggled for a while. It had honestly never occurred to me that someone would visit a gogo bar to see dancing girls. It certainly hasn’t occurred to most gogo girls.
The Chrome Pole Shuffle
There are a few exceptions, of course. The “A-Team” at Soi Cowboy’s Rawhide, along with their counterparts at Long Gun, can certainly dance. So can a few of the showgirls at Angelwitch. But that, unfortunately, is about it. Every other gogo girl in Bangkok is content to stand languidly at her chrome pole, gently swaying in time to whatever tune is going through her head. Invariably this is in an entirely different time signature to whatever music is actually being played in the bar, but again, nobody seems to mind.
Gogo bars are not about dancing girls. They’re about having a drink and a laugh, with the option of a quick, easy lay. If you want to see dancing girls, hit the coyote clubs, the G-clubs or the discos.
The point of gogo bars is that I can quickly scan a room full of 20-200 girls in bikinis (or less), and pick out the ones who are going to look good naked, and be fun to spend time with. I don’t have to seduce them. I don’t have to impress them. I just have to choose.
Q Bar may have more hot girls than Baccara on a good evening. But is that posh dress covering a midriff decorated with a pattern of stretch marks resembling the Tube map? And a reinforced cast-iron bra that’s the only thing separating her tits from her knees? You don’t really know, until you get her home.
More reasonably-priced freelance girls often seem cheaper than their pole-hugging counterparts. Most worthwhile gogo girls will quote ฿2,000 for short-time, or will reluctantly go long-time for ฿3,000. Freelancers are frequently happy enough with ฿2,000 for all night and often the better part of the next day. Plus there’s no barfine. But if you’re paying ฿400-฿600 to get into the club where they hang out, then ฿200-฿300 a beer once you’re inside, the price difference can easily swing the other way.
I’m not advocating one approach over the other. The beaty of Bangkok, as I’ve said before, is that you don’t have to choose. Start your night on Rachada or RCA, Ekkamai or Thong Lo, checking out “good” girls at the clubs and bars. Get a few phone numbers. Then head over a G Club like Forte to butter up that cute uni girl you’ve been working on. Listen to the band, watch the coyote girls work it. Horny yet? Get a taxi down to Cowboy and short-time an Issan paddy-princess. Then on to a late night disco and cruise the mixed crowd at The Tunnel, or simply hit Nana Disco for unbridled whoremongering. It’s all out there, and there’s no reason you have to choose one over the other.
The perceived wisdom is “gogo bars for easy girls, discos/clubs for hot girls”. But I know of a few gogo girls who would have put every freelancer in Q Bar in the shade. Not many, I’ll admit. But they’re out there.

That hits the nail on the head, at least for me. I’ve shown a few Bangkok Virgins around the bars, and they’re a joy to watch. Take them into Rainbow 4 and they crack a smile as wide as the Sukumvit-Asoke junction. But after a while, they realise I’m only looking at maybe two girls. It’s all about that top ten percent - if that.
I don’t wander into Rainbow 4 (for example) and think “Wow, I’m surrounded by hot girls”. I think “Okay, there’s about 150 girls in here, so there’s probably 15 worth investigating”. Of those, there’ll probably be 5 that look the part. These are the ones I talk to, to see whether they’re going to be any fun.
The same applies anywhere else. Some bars will have girls of whom maybe 20% appeal - Rainbow 3 often qualifies there, as does Baccara and (sometimes) the Dollhouse or Mandarin. That’s why they’re on the “Best Gogo in Bangkok” poll on the front page. Other bars are closer to 0% - many of the Crown Group bars, Erotica, and the smaller bars like Joy Ngwen or Cocktail Club on Cowboy. Not to mention at least half of Patpong.
The elusive search for a venue containing more than 20% hot chicks is tempered by the fact that the longer you spend in Bangkok, the pickier you can afford to be. For some first-time visitors, their home country has been so unkind to them that their criteria for a suitable bed partner is little more than “female, with a pulse”. Months or even weeks later, they’re turning away Buriram’s finest because they’ve gone native and want a pale-skinned Bangkok or Chiang Mai girl.
Add the fact that everyone’s looking for something different, and that we all have our own preferred “hunting style”, and you soon realise that there’s never going to be a single “best place to be”. But that’s a good thing. If there was, we’d never all be able to get a seat.
You mean to say that some people go to a gogo bar to actually watch the girls dance. Incredible.

Go figure Wombat :) …. anyway, during the 10 - 12 months I've spent in BKK over the last three years I have never failed to find first rate produce that's easy on the wallet - I probably havent had the time to become as selective as some of you and as yet don't feel the need to - but every one of them would be highly desirable back here in the UK - For now, that's good enough.

The prices you state for go-go tarts seems over the odds to me. I've never done short time, appart from bj's in toilets (I'm shy), but i only ever pay 1,000 + taxi for long time. And taxi is 200 baht, i live Thonburi which is a fair way from the On Nut hooker ghetto.
I'm 40, not bad looking, half decent shag, body was once ok. So not your young Khao San truely hunsum man. And I'm very fussy, and my type is, tall, slim, 40kg down. Let me be honest: if I see a "hot girl" I want to have sex her and if for some reason that is not possible then this "hotness" means nothing to me.

@RonBaltimore - G-Club, aka 'Gentlemans Club' or members club. Tons of them in Bkk……some of the most accessible and farang-friendly are Sopranos (Soi 26), Forte (RCA), Pent (Wireless Rd), Ritz (Soi 11)…..if you search on those names you'll find plenty about them in the kokosphere.

And seeing as I have you here, Between the Grande Sukhumvit hotel on Soi 6 and the Holiday Inn next to the Intercont,whats the best choice/location and so on do u recon? NEC is the National Exhibition Centre, in Birmingham, England. Rots of ruck! NEP is same-same as Nana. My best stays have been at the Dynasty Grande (off Soi Nana and south a bit - classy) the old Dynasty (Dysentry) virtually next door to the NEP, and Majestic Suites, a condom's snap from the NEP on Suk Street.

I'm guessing the references to Q Bar are slightly tongue-in-cheek, but what proportion of the girls who go there actually are freelancers? I've been quite a few times while on hol in BKK over the last few years and my guess would that a minority of the girls who go there are on the game, others being hi-so wannabees. Or maybe it's just that my whoredar isn't as finely tuned as other posters'…?

Went to Hard Rock and CM2 last night, both are 100% freelancer. Hard Rock girls were 5-7, some in CM2 got closer to 8. CM2 is also 50% Russian/CIS girls, who seem popular with the large number of South Asian and Middle East guys who go to that club these days.

Somewhat off topic, but close enough. The last three trips to Bangkok, I got laid for free. Girl working in a hospital, girl looking to get married, university girl at a club near Nana Plaza. I am ok looking, could lose a few pounds, far over 30, and a rather unpleasant sort. Why am I getting laid for free in Thailand?! I can't figure it out. Maybe because I look like a boyscout/alter boy? Don't look at the girl like fuck toys? Treat them with respect and try to get to know them? Any clues Bad Boy?

@sniffer - there are two sides to Bed Suppeclub, the larger part where people eat on the beds earlier in the evening, and the loud music side with a tiny dance floor. I don't think there are ever many freelancers on the larger side, and I'd guess 15% or less girls in the smaller part are freelancer, but some evenings none at all.

I have been in thaland since the early 80's and although would love to say "you should hav ebeen here then" it doesn't seem to be much diferent then before.

The only thing that realy matters here is what your tastes and spending limits are. I willl go for the ultra-hot girls on occasions, but i find they are less accomadating then their not as hot peers, most of the times. As a few here have said, when they are in these high priced venues, they tend to act a bit stuck-up. The go-go bar girls and freelancers there are more willing to please and, to me, they are a lot better in bed and more willing to try that "taboo" act the ultra-hottie thought was beneath her to do. So if we give the good looking girl a little more cash to do the things we like, she still ends up costing less then that -not so good in bed- hottie. Most times, all you ever got was something really pretty just laying there waiting for you to be finished. So i will aggree to Twerp on his point. But i will concede, it is great to see that ultra-hottie going down on you as she looks up at you with those sulrty eyes and that perfect ass sticking up in the air.

Now being new to Bangkok doesn't make me a virgin to these scenarios (Yea, should have come here years ago!). Have been around the world in my 40+ years and lusted after all types of women. Asian woman are the hottest for me. I am picky still and will not settle for some run down mom of 5 (and the scars to prove it) to get my rocks off nor do i go gaga walking into these bars as the girlies swarm around me. I will pick up the girl that appeals to me most and barfine her. Most everytime it works for me.
I am thankful for all the suggestions received here and everyones opinion of what they like, but don't go by what everybody suggests you do or what bar you should go visit, since they are only telling you what they want and like. Who cares?!? Do what feels good to you. If you want the rough slutty looking girl in the corner… go for it! She may just shag your brains out (for a cheap price)!
