Random Internet Chat…

Here is a short transcript from a Skype chat I had only moments ago. Out of nowhere someone with the handle- SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX starts talking to me. Given the handle I was assuming something funky but I figured I would respond anyway.

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: hi

Smitty: hello

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: how are you?

Smitty: i am fine u?

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: horny

Smitty: เงี่ยน?

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: Thai?

Smitty: well - given your screename I would assume u speak thai but I guess not

Smitty: not horny anymore?

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: i am horny

Smitty: but u are not thai?

SEX/BANGOK/THAILAND/XXX: I am Thai. you?

Smitty: but can’t read thai?

Anyway. No response after that. I am quite positive the Thai went through okay since I have used Skype with my friends before passing Chinese and Japanese words around. The word I typed in was horny - just wanted to see if this thing on the other side of Skype was Thai or not. Who knows.

I had exactly the same Skype username contact me also. Normally I ignore the junk that pops up on Skype chat but thought I’d have some fun and ask a few questions. Whoever it was also asked me if i was horny and said she was a Thai girl called ‘Fah’. I also asked some questions in basic thai but received no response to suggest they understood. She then sent a photo supposedly of herself but it was clearly a topless Japanese girl taken from some porno site. I told her there was no way that the person in the photo was Thai and she said ‘ok I send you real photo’. The next file she tried to send me was a huge file that was way too big to be a photo so I immediately cancelled it and blocked them from my contact list.

    Strange…

a - funny. I am not the only one then. I always throw some Thai at the girls online to make sure they are Thai. Sounds so silly but it works. Same with this dude. I just don’t get what the scam would be? I am sure they want something but in this manner what is it?

This reminds me of when I ran a BBS (Bulletin Board, predecessor to the internet). I had some jerk send me a file, then chat with me, overly keen that I open it. It was a very poor attempt. A .exe executable file that could only really be a virus at the size it was. I deleted it and banned the person.

A lot of the IM programs have very poor security and leave your system open to viruses, worms, spyware and the like. I’ve weaned myself off them.

    Gee. Aren’t they getting creative?
It took a while for this plant-a- file thing to materialize. used to be that all you had to worry about was some dirty cop passing you a J at the full moon party then busting you :-)

It might have been DTR, desperate for some attention.

This has happen to me on Thailovelinks as well. I get a message from ‘A Thai college girl’ I too did the Thai language test and got the same dead response after which they logged off. Knowing some Thai is a great way to filter out these con artists who probably are trying to steal your identity. It’s already hard enough filtering out the ones who are Thai without being subject to these fools so I suggest everyone interested in Thai girls learn a few Thai phrases to check.

I don’t mean to go off topic but I noticed from some of the previous posts things somehow end up that way. Since your on the subject of Internet chatting. I recently bought myself an ipod touch(I know, I’m a few generations behind on the whole portable media thing), but found myself digging for podcasts. Being that you guys often post weekly updates on the whole Bangkok P4P scene and often post personal opinions and observations, have you guys ever thought of doing a podcast? I think it might save some of the time(and effort) in typing and also gives your fans a more personal touch.

Now I know there’s a few things to be considered:
1.) I can understand that you guys are heavily looking into the next location for the new Big Mango. And believe me, we’re all anticipating the new location.

2.) A podcast with interviews from and with BGs would be interesting since photography is prohibited in many of these joints, it might be easier with a tape recorder(or equivalent). I know many of us are big fans of the broken engrish.

3.) I’m pretty sure most of your fanbase, being that they know how to operate a computer(to view your blog) would be able to play mp3s’.

This is just a strange idea I thought of as I sit, awake in the Land of Ugly Skanks(US) and reminisce of my holidays. I figured you guys are already a niche blog amongst BBB and a hand full of other Thailand bloggers.

cj - interesting and have thought about it but the basic problem is that with blogs of this nature there is no Money in it. Podcasts even worse since no way of putting in ads. Also - typing is a lot easier since I am typing right now from a cafe in Phnom Penh. Podcasting - decent quality is not easy and u need some equipment. I honestly think it also will find less listeners than posts since people can use RSS readers and such. Granted it may be cool but not sure worth the effort.

    Something to think about though.

Thanks Smitty you made some very good points. I usually await the e-mail updates to check the site but hadn’t realized RSS is a good way to check for updates as well.
