Bangkok is full of hidden gems when it comes to eating but many times the busy Soi’s no longer have decent places for tasty, reliable and decently priced Thai food. Niyom restaurant at the end of Soi 4 tends to be the best place in the area but is usually only known by the Thai’s or the people who live on Soi 4. Niyom is the very last restaurant on Soi 4 on the right hand side - before you cross the way into the Cigarette factory.
It is owned by a local family who lives on Soi 4 and I think pretty much everyone working there is related. They specialize in Chinese style duck and beef noodle soups but they have a decent size menu of almost anything one could want in Bangkok style Thai food. They also have a nice picture menu and I think one menu in English so don’t fear checking the place out and ordering something different.
The cool thing about Niyom is just how cheap it is to have a tasty meal. My regular lunch time dish is a veggie dish with crispy pork and a fried egg on top. Total price with a bottle of water is 36 baht and this is for a good size plate. The duck is awesome and I suggest trying a small plate of the duck breast in soy sauce as an appetizer to go along with another dish. Can’t beat it. Also the fried scallops appetizer is great as well. So if you happen to be on Soi 4 and looking to try something new just keep walking to the end of the soi until you see Niyom. You can hit Naree massage on the way back up the soi.
side note: Was watching Season 5 episode 3 of The Shield today and was highly bummed out with one of their plot lines. Seems some Mexican gang bangers were taking kids and selling them into the sex trade. When some of the kids came up missing it was discovered they had been shipped to Asia. Yes - Bangkok. Seems really over the top to me and I doubt it is accurate at all. Low blow and another way Thailand gets a bad rap when Hollywood uses places like Bangkok for sensationalist plot lines. Oh well. Still dig the show.
‘Lem’ gets killed in last episode.
- Doh.. didn’t spoilt it did I ?

Good info on the restaurant….sounds great.
Always stay at Omni Tower Soi 4, which is half way down the soi, so just a short hop for some ‘nose-bag’ Good work!!

I eat here often and have to second that emotion. Extremely tasty and very cheap. Don’t expect to be blown away with friendly chuckle-head waitresses and it’s pretty much a “walk right in, pick a table, outdoor cafeteria” type of place.

Big Mango Bar:
Has the ‘monthly special’ on the menu changed recently?
As a ‘die-hard’ Big Mango Food fan… the ’special’ chicken thingy is worth shouting about.

You get the occasional chuckle-head waitress.
On one of my first trips there such a girl handed me her note pad and insisted that I wrote down what I wanted, in Thai. She wouldn’t budge.
Yeah, the duck is good.

Isn’t that close to the Malaysia border?

Niyom is great. Only for the special which is duck, duck and duck with sauce. It’s truly great.
Opposite the hidden gem Nana Thai hotel the only hotel that always has vacancies whatever time of year. Huge rooms and a great reminder fo Bangkok in the early 70s. Girls tell you its full of ghosts.
get drunk on cheap Thai booze in Niyom. Good recommendation but raraely see faranags there.

I’m a big fan of Niyom as well, been eating there (or take-away) at least three times per week for ~ 4 years as I also live in that neighborhood. In addition to the duck they do get some decent seafood as well; try the Hoy Lie (which are clams prepared “kra pao” style). Note this restaurant closes by 8 PM, maybe earlier on weekends. They also get daily produce/seafood so often run out of things during the dinner hours. There mare many, many restaurants of this type (pat ta karn; open-air, reasonably-priced) in Bangkok, it’s just a matter of looking for them.
re: side note, The Shield’s ’sister show’, The Unit, also had an embarrassing Thailand plot/reference in a season 2 ep., re: a Thai prince in LA.

m - niyom is good stuff.
on the Unit - I can’t say I am that impressed. Nothing compared to the shield but the SE asian goof in this one was worse than the shield.
They went to some se asian island where the people looked Vietnamese, spoke Bahasa and were reading upside down Thai characters. One would assume with all the money these boys are making that they could get decent continuity experts. Pretty pathetic if u ask me.
