Nana or Bust

Happy Asanha Puja day, folks. And happy Wan Kao Pansa for tomorrow.

And yes, that means bar closures. Dave the Rave confirms that Nana Plaza will be open on both nights, where the bar owners seem to have mostly agreed to make a very charitable contribution to the cause in order to stay open. Many of the beer bars on Soi 4 will also be open, confirmed by the beer girl asleep in my bed, who has asked to be woken up for work at 5pm.

Soi Cowboy is confirmed as closed, along with Patpong. No definite word on Soi 33, but I’d guess it’ll be closed. I’m told Bangkok’s regular pubs will be open for business as usual.

Amusingly, a Soi Cowboy mamasan last night told me that yes, her bar would be closed for the following two nights. So if I wanted to take a girl, I could pay triple the usual barfine and keep her for three whole days! Thanks, but no thanks.

SOI NANA @ 7:00 PM - Morning Night have decided to close and give their staff a holiday on the 29th and 30th.  Also, Golden Beer Bar (attached to Nana Hotel) are also closed.  Right now the Big Mango Bar, Lucky Lukes and Big Dogs have scooped up the early birds.  Most go-go bars in Nana Plaza will be open.  Some of the smaller (and less popular go-go bars) have decided to close, but most will be open in NEP.

The sois around lower Sukhumvit are much quieter and so, travel is an easier option with some folks making the most of a long weekend.

Was wondering if you could recommend a few good girl-friendly hotels in in the SC/Nana or Patpong area.  Also, I'll be there in mid Sep for 2 weeks and I hear its low season.  Is that good or bad?  Maybe I can buy you a few pints when I'm in town.  It's the least I can do for all the info I got from your sight.  Thanks.

Shooter: As a fellow Canuckian and experienced visitor to the Land of Smirks I feel obliged to offer some advice to a n00bie. September is smack dab in the middle of monsoon season but umbrellas are cheap and prices should be lower for everything from hotels to girls. A pair of long rubber boots would come in handy too for the side streets (during the afternoon flooding).
There is no Canadian brew here but any beer except Thai beer is good and cheaper than back in maple leaf land. They some some weird restrictions on when you can buy beer in the supermarket (only certain hours of the day that I haven't quite figured out the reason for).
I've tried to book into the Nana hotel before but it's always been "fully booked". You can't get much closer to Nana Plaza though. As long as you don't care about getting any sleep the noise factor shouldn't be an issue. Whether you can get a room there or not the Nana restaurant has the best lunch buffet I've experienced anywhere. The sushi bar and vast selection of Thai dishes are hard to beat for the price.
I've had trouble with bringing "guests" into the more upscale hotels near Patpong (charged me extra) but if you decide which area you want to stay (Nana or the "Pong") then I'm sure some kind reader can get you sorted.

I know a good, VERY guest-friendly hotel in Patpong: Strand Inn (http://www.strandinn.com). Standard room price is normally 1600THB but in september you should get it for a 1000THB.

I'd personally prefer to stay in  Sukhumvit than Silom - much more going on there. Lots of mongers swear by the Omni Tower on Suk Soi 4, with others preferring the Majestic Suites, also very nearby. I've never stayed in either though - when I vacationed in Thailand, I always stayed with a friend.

Do not check out pattaya on the net, just go there! But do not stay too long, only a few days and move on…
BBB is right, the Suk area def is busier and more diverse. FYI a taxi ride from silom to nana costs a mere 40 to 50THB.

Aye. And before midnight, the skytrain or underground are even cheaper and easier. The taxis round Soi 4 and Patpong prey on newbies though, refusing to use the meter and the usual tricks.

On Pattaya, people seem to love or hate it. It's an entire city built on the sex trade, so has to be seen for that reason alone. On the plus side, it's cheaper than Bangkok, but on the negative side it's too seedy for many folks, and nowhere near as safe.

You guys are spoiling me.  Pretty much planned my time in Bangkok just from the info on this site.  A massage at the Ogoto, soapy at the Cozy, quality time at the Star of Light, and real quality time at the Eden.  Ofcourse the Nana and Soi Cowboy for additional entertainment.  Still like to go to Phuket for a few days, the Valhala hotel seems interesting.  After that not sure.  I have 2 weeks to kill.

BBB, still would like to say thanks with a few pints.  To the rest of you, thanks very much and keep it coming.

There are a ton of soapies on Rachada with hotter girls than the Cosy, but I haven't reviewed them yet. Likewise the oilies, although they're mostly pretty similar with the exception of the fantastic Tulip, which is one of the reviews in the pipeline, so to speak.

Another piece in the pipeline (oo-er) is a list of things the discerning monger absolutely must do in Bangkok. I suspect you'll find it useful :)

Shooter: If you only have 2 weeks, I would recommend a week in BKK hitting Patpong 1 (especially the King's Group bars) and Patpong 2 (Star of Light), Soi Cowboy and Nana Entertainment Plaza plus the massage palaces covered here; half a week in Phuket (Patong in your case) and half a week in Pattaya. I've never been impressed with the quality of talent in Pattaya but it's worth going there once just to see the place, I guess.
The 2 weeks will go by fast and if you're like most people you will be planning your next visit as soon as you leave.
It's a good idea to use this site for information as most of the more popular spots have been covered and there's even maps for Nana and Cowboy. Still waiting for one for Patpong, though.  :-(

    @ Shooter
Right, you can save 10 to 20 THB (and 20-30 minutes on busy days) by using the skytrain to get there…
I definitely dig Pattaya, although I had quite a big deal of prejudices against the whole thing before actually having seen it. If, like me, you like partying without having to look at your watch, it is the place to be!
A place which hasn't been mentioned yet but is worth having a look at is Samui, especially in september as you will have decent weather but still great low season deals. Lamai in Samui has quite a big deal of P4P opportunities (only beer bars and freelancer-joints though, no gogo) to offer and the beaches are just wonderful. I know a few very nice hotels there if you are interested…

Come on BBB, there basically are only 3 worthy spots in Patpong: Star of Light for a quicky after work, Twilo for the band and the freelancers and The After in Patpong II for the freelancers when one's fed up with Spicy and looking for some change. :-) Should not hang too long in the pipelines… Samui is neither Pattaya nor Bangkok, less girls & P4P options definitely. Samui is not Phi Phi or Koh Chang either, the landscape's great but not that great! And the gals/bars aren't always that easy to spot (except in Lamai where they are everywhere). Still a very nice place though! Looking forward to your friend's report…

I would recommend Koh Samui too but maybe for the next trip. Chaweng Beach (north of Lamai) with soft, sugar-white sand is my favourite but I don't think the lad is coming for the beaches.
There is one big club in Chaweng that has a DJ playing great dance music and is full of free-lancers. It has no walls which is kind of neat and a fantastic sound system and a lot of freaks dancing on the stage. There are a few beer bars on the same street and they are open air with maybe one pole with a girl twirling around on it to attract customers. One plus is the bar-fines and price for the dirty deed is about half as much as Krung Thep.
The problem is getting to and from Samui takes the better part of a day and when all is said and done the amount and quality of working girls there pales in comparison to Phuket.
@Shooter: Eden Club is a chance to star in your own porn movie for an hour and a half with two or as many girls as you can afford. Star of Light has been around for years and is still the best skull bar in the city.

probably talking about Green Mango in Chaweng, nice club I agree!
It does only take one hour to get there if you fly from Suvarnabhumi with Bangkok Airlines. The first and the last flight everyday (at 6am and 10pm) cost 2500THB. To book 2-3 days in advance during low season and 10 days in advance during high season. Another, cheaper option is to fly to Surat Thani and to catch a boat from there. Should take 4-5 hours and cost around 1500THB which is about as much as by train/boat in 1st class (18 hours!!! horror-trip, made it once, never again).

probably talking about Green Mango in Chaweng - farangsay
The bar I went to was the Reggae bar. It is on the other side of the street from the Green Mango club. That whole area apparently is called Green Mango Square.
The best time I had was after last call and I took my free-lancer date on my rented motocy to an after-hours party on the main drag in Chaweng. That was the first time I drank vodka with Red Bull (or Les Boo as she called it). Not bad!

Been once at reggae bar but just didn't encounter the same experience as you did. Don't you have red bull in the US? In Germany and Switzerland it's been around for more than 10 years (a milder version though with less caffeine than in Thailand) and vodka red bull is the most ordered drink in any club…

    farangsay,
Yes, we've had Red Bull (a weaker version in a can) here in Canada and the U.S. for a few years. I hardly ever drink hard liquor and it just never occurred to me that Red Bull might be used as a mixer - before that night in Samui. And it took me a few minutes to figure out what Les Boo was but the bartender didn't even flinch.
As an aside, about 8 years ago I fell in lust with a couple of sisters in Lamai and almost married the younger one. I was back there two years ago and was amazed at how much it had grown. Paved roads and a lot of construction. It is still my idea of a tropical island paradise though. The view from the lookout between Chaweng and Lamai is phenomenal.

Nothing to be jealous about unless you envy me for having carnal relations with both of them and older sister said she wanted to marry me if her younger sao didn't. Sadly, I went back to work in America and never saw either one again.

Watch out for the ladyboys in Soi Green Mango. There are tons of them, and I was within a drunken whisker (or several in fact) of making a schoolboy error a couple of New Years' back.

Why is everyone giving Shooter advice? Here's what I foresee:

Shooter arrives for the first time at Suvarnabhumi for his first visit to BKK. He is touted by the upstairs limos and pays 5x more than he should to get to his hotel of choice. He then arrives at the hotel, checks in, takes his bags to his room, and hits the shower. He dashes to the first beer bar he finds before closing. He eyes out a pretty and young hottie in the bar. He barfines her for the night and goes back to his hotel room. After a night of delightful shagging he goes back the next night and barfines the same girl for his entire two week vacation. While never leaving his hotel room except to eat, his two weeks of vacation flies past so fast he wonders where it all went.

Off to the airport with his 'teeluk' in hand, cying her eyes out and desperatly pleading for him to return, Shooter promises to return in 3 months.

Shooter arrives home, tries to find a way to quit his job and move to Thailand all while sponsering his new love from afar.

His new love, with ailing Grandma and sick buffalo live happily ever after.

@ Ma - WOW….Ma you sure paint a rosie picture.  Wondering if you are recalling your first trip.  How's your adopted Grandma doing….still paying the monthly life support bill?

This might be my first trip to Thailand, but its not my first time around the block.  Been all over the world, spent 3 yrs in Europe, 18 months throughout the Middle East, and spent time in more countries than I care to name.  I'd even dare to say my experiences have been just as if not more "adventureous" than yours.  I'm assuming here that you actually get out and the extent of your social life isn't in  your mom's basement on the computer.

One thing I like to do is get a feel for where I'm going.  Travel books and the web can only tell you so much and you have to agree, Thailand is one of the more exotic and unique places in the world and lets not forget the constantly changing part.  So why not ask the people who know what they're talking about.  I'm sure that BBB had some intention of helping a few ignorant tourists as myself when he created this web site and for that I am eternally grateful.

But if you're concered for my welfare, Ma, perhaps you could meet me at the airport, take my hand, and keep me safe from all the bad people who would try to exploit my good nature……or….here's a thought…. I can take the advice and info that BBB and friends have given me, apply some of it to my trip, maybe get burned a bit (I'm a big boy though and should come through it fine) and have a good time.
@All - Well, I hope I put Ma's fears to rest.  He has to stop caring so much….its going to eat him up inside.  Again I want to say thanks to all of you who have helped me so far.  As I said before I'll throw my 2 cents in once in awhile and share my experiences when I get back.  Thanks again.

@ Ma - Love you, Man

Heh, no worries. It can be tricky to determine the "tone of voice" people mean when reading written posts - something like 90% of communication is non-verbal. I think most "flamewars" are started when people take comments seriously that were meant as jokes.

For my own part, if in any doubt, I'm usually taking the piss. This is, after all, the cornerstone of British humour. Many of us are playing characters in these little exchanges too, lest we forget.

I try to nip any hostilities in the bud, but nothing wrong with a little fun. You guys go ahead - no scratching or hair-pulling though…

Damn Shooter…… How do you know me? I really am just a 12 year old junior high school girl living in my Grandmother’s basement using our dial up Internet connection haggling all you newbies heading to LOS predicting your virginity losses.   No, really, when do you get into BKK? I would love to hold your hand. Of course it will cost you four 750ml of that fine Canadian Crown Royal. I will be back in BKK at the end of August…. (24th)…. That is if my Grandma removes my grounding she placed on me for running up the phone costs. I promise to keep you away from all the tuktuk touts, gem stores, and tailor shops…. And direct your attention to all the beer bars, soapies, massage parlors, etc….. until your ‘lil man’ can not take it anymore…. But please let me know so that I can arrange to get a passport since I never have had one before…  By the way, my first experience in BKK was back in 1998. It was something that I will never forget and at being my age, I have a lot of good memories, of Thailand and elsewhere. I guess I was one of the few lucky ones, I had a colleague “hold my hand” during my first trip and I’m not one of those footing the vet bill for the buffalo.  As BBB stated, it was only a humorous scenario I placed regarding your future. I hope, and think, that you are a much wiser man than that. Although you stated you had traveled the Middle Eastern countries, and I ask myself, why would anyone want to go there? My only thought would be to make a quick $$$ in a dangerous environment.

@Ma - You're out of your mind, son….no amount of hand holding will get you 4 bottles of Crown from any self respecting Canadian, I don't care what part of the world you're in.  That being said, I give you points for asking for Crown by name…..we may find some common ground yet.

You went and spoiled a whole day for me.  I was going to ask a tuktuk driver to take me to the best tailor shop in BKK and have some suits made with the profits from reselling my gems.  Oh well, back to the soapie for me.

You thought right, I have gained some wisdom in my travels and I know you were having fun with me.  I had a good laugh and was actually quite flattered I was the target of your barbs.  After re-reading mine though, some of it might have sounded less than gracious, and I do apologize if you got that impression.  I have a pretty good sarcastic streak and it might not have translated too well in writing.  The part about me travelling is true.  Been to a lot of places and seen alot of things, but from what I've heard, there's no place like Thailand that could compare.

As far as my Middle East adventures……part of my job….got to keep the world safe for democracy and all that.  I'm sure we'd have a few interesting stories to tell each other.  Hell, some of them might actually be true…..first rounds on me.

I miss my CR… I actually used to buy it at the Thai airport and bring to over to China with me until they stopped allowing more than 100ml of liquids on the planes. Damn 100ml is only good for one drink!  As far as your reply, not harm taken, I actually enjoyed it. I am a bit sarcastic myself if you haven’t noticed so far. But I take you as a wise man and respect you for your honesty. I am sure, as others readers on here alike, have traveled the world thoroughly. I, myself, have only seen SE Asia, North and South America, although I did take my first trip to Sweden earlier this year. I plan on doing more traveling to Europe and Australia after I retire in a few years. That is if I live that long and my beautiful Thai wife will allow us.  And I’m serious, let me know when you arrive in BKK, I am there once a month for a week and would be glad to hook up and share some stories. Hell, I don’t know much about Canada except that I always wanted to do some muskie and pike fishing there since I was a little lad, and the fact that you all have the finest whiskey I always drink along with a great hockey team you provided to us in Colorado…. Go Avs!!!!

@ Ma - I'm gonna let that AVS comment go…you must have been drunk when you made it… :)  I'll be in BKK 10 Sep until 14 Sep and then back around the 23 Sep for 3 days.  I'll make sure the un-metered taxi gets me to you.  Hope we can get together.
